Guinness PLC
Founded
1886
Guinness PLC was the manufacturer of the world-famous Irish stout brand of the same name, who entered the whisky industry through its acquisition of Arthur Bell & Sons in 1985. The following year it completed a further acquisition in the shape of the sprawling Distillers Company Limited (DCL), and it created a new entity known as United Distillers to manage its whisky holdings in 1987.
Guinness PLC eventually merged with Grand Metropolitan in 1997, and the new company became what we know today as Diageo.
