Glen Ord
Glen Ord is a malt whisky distillery located on the Black Isle in Scotland's Highland region. It was founded in Muir of Ord in 1838 by Thomas MacKenzie and is today part of the extensive Diageo holdings, having been folded into the Distillers Company in 1925 through its merger with Buchanan-Dewar. Today it is one of the few distilleries in Scotland that is self-sufficient in malt and also provisions several other producers in the Diageo group.
Over the years, the distillery's single malt has been sold under various different brand names. In the late 19th century it was marketed as Glenoran, whereas John Dewar & Sons sold it as Glenordie in the 1980s. In its most recent guise it is part of the multi-distillery The Singleton brand, for which it also houses the visitor experience.
Despite having been sold as a single malt in the early 20th century and in the 1970s and 1980s by both John Dewar & Sons and Peter Dawson Ltd under license from the Distillers Company, it was not until 1993 that the distillery's whisky was sold under the Glen Ord name. This followed the introduction of a 12-year-old bottling by United Distillers.
The expression continued to be marketed by Diageo into the 21st century and was repackaged into a new square bottle shape in 2004, matching the presentation style used for the previous year's 28-year-old from Special Releases range. It was also included in the 2004 and 2005 Special Releases before being discontinued in 2006 when the distillery was packaged alongside Dufftown and Glendullan as the newly relaunched The Singleton brand.
