Knockdhu
Knockdhu is a Speyside malt distillery located just outside Keith in the town of Knock. Built in 1893, it is notable for having been the first malt distillery built by the Distillers Company which owned the majority of its vast portfolio from its aggressive acquisitions policy. This did not, however, save it from the chopping block during the company's late period of oversupply and it was mothballed in 1983.
Following the acquisition of Distillers Company by Guinness, Knockdhu was sold to Inver House Distillers in 1989 and it resumed production the following year. It remains part of its portfolio today as part of the ThaiBev group and its single malt is marketed under the AnCnoc brand name.
Although the distillery's single malt brand is called AnCnoc, it was originally introduced as Knockdhu by Inver House Distillers in 1990. Only fleeting however, it was promptly relaunched as AnCnoc in 1993 as it was felt the distillery name too closely resembled that of neighbouring Knockando and its already well-established brand. At the time, only the name changed and the label design and sole core range 12-year-old remained consistent.
The Knockdhu brand has since been used only twice on official bottlings. Both cask strength limited editions, they were a 21-year-old released in 1999 and a 23-year-old in 2001.
