Brora
Brora is a single malt distillery with a storied history in the Sutherland area of Scotland. It was originally built in 1819 as Clynelish, operating under that name until a new distillery was built next-door in 1967. It operated briefly as Clynelish B before closing in 1968. It re-opened as Brora the following year, producing a peated style single malt until 1973 until reverting back to its traditional style before closing again in 1983.
The distillery's single malt produced during its two periods of closure has become revered by collectors, so-much-so in fact that the distillery was eventually rebuilt and re-opened in 2021 following a multi-million pound investment by Diageo.
When the distillery re-opened as Brora in 1969, its purpose was solely for the provision of peated whisky for the blending companies within the Distillers Company portfolio. As such it was never officially bottled as a single during that period of operation. The first single malt bottlings to bear the Brora name were released by independent bottlers and the debut distillery bottlings were produced in 1995 as part of United Distillers' Rare Malts Selection.
The official Brora single malt brand was then launched in 2002 when it was included as part of the Diageo Special Releases that year. It featured in every subsequent annual batch of the Special Releases until 2017, and has also been included in the company's Casks of Distinction and Prima & Ultima collections. Although distilled in a different era, a box-set of three vintages called the Triptych became the first official Brora single malt bottlings to be release while the distillery was operational when it was launched in 2021.
