Dalwhinnie
Dalwhinnie is a malt distillery located high up in the Cairngorms National Park in Scotland's Highland whisky region. In fact, it is both the highest and coldest in Scotland and this unique setting, coupled with its use of worm tub condensers and minimal copper contact all contribute to the production of its famously weighty, sulphuric new make.
The distillery was built in 1897, passing through various ownerships until acquired by the Distillers Company in 1926. It is today part of the significant Scotch whisky holdings of Diageo and the Highland representative in its Classic Malts of Scotland range.
Under the ownership of the Distillers Company, the license for Dalwhinnie was assigned to James Buchanan & Co and its malt became an integral part of a number of its blended Scotch brands, including Black & White and Special Red Seal. Despite these labels being its primary interests, the company did begin to bottle some single malts in the 1970s, launching the Dalwhinnie brand in the early 1980s with the introduction of an 8-year-old expression.
The brand was then relaunched in the middle of the decade, with the flagship expression changed to a 15-year-old and the squat bottle shape now synonymous with it introduced. It was this release that was then repackaged by United Distillers as one of its six Classic Malts of Scotland in 1988, and was the only of those bottlings to have existed prior to the introduction of the series. The James Buchanan name remained on the label briefly before being removed in the early 1990s.
Today the 15-year-old remains at the forefront of the brand's core range, with a non-age statement release called Winter's Gold being the only permanent offerings. They are supported by the annual Distillers Edition bottling, and occasional limited editions in Diageo's various premium output such as its Special Releases and Casks of Distinction.
