Loch Lomond distillery was opened in 1966 by Duncan Thomas' Littlemill Distillery Company. As with a number of American-owned projects at the time, the company envisaged a distillery that allowed it to be fully self-reliant in its blending needs by producing a range of different single malt and single grain styles. Its original set-up was a pair of pot stills with rectifying plates in their necks, also known as Lomond stills. These have since been supplemented by further Lomond stills, several column stills and two traditional swan-necked pot stills.

The distillery is today owned by the Loch Lomond Group, which markets a number of different whisky brands produced there. These include the classic Loch Lomond malt, alongside Croftengea, Inchmurrin and Inchmoan.

On account of its varied production, the Loch Lomond brand has also taken a number of forms in its fairly short history. The first permanent Loch Lomond-branded distillery bottlings appeared in the early 2000s and included a non-age statement and a 21-year-old single malt, and a single blend.

Following its sale to the Loch Lomond Group, the brand was given a makeover and relaunched in 2015. Its core range now included a non-age statement single malt called Original, two single blends called Reserve and Signature, and a single grain whisky made from column-distilled malted barley (known internally as Rhosdhu). A 12- and 18-year-old single malt were then added the following year.

in 2020 the core range was refreshed again. Having previously marketed its 12-year-old  Inchmurrin and Inchmoan single malts as separate brands, these were now incorporated as subcategories of the Loch Lomond label. A new bottle and label design was then introduced in 2022 alongside three new core range single grain whiskies. They are joined in the current core range by Original, a 10-, 12, 14-, 18, 21 and 30-year-old, and the 12-year-old Inchmurrin and Inchmoan malts.
