Argyll Group
Argyll Group PLC was a holding company established in 1983 through the merger of Amalgamated Distilled Products (ADP) with James Gulliver's supermarket group, Argyll Foods PLC. Through ADP the company had a drinks division that included Barton Brands in the US, the Littlemill, Loch Lomond and Glen Scotia malt distilleries and several blending interests in Scotland. It also owned the wholesaler, George Morton, and several other beer, wine and spirits holdings.
The company was unsuccessful in a hostile takeover attempt of the Distillers Company in 1986, forcing it to reconsider its place in the drinks industry. The result was its divestment from all of its distilling activities in 1987. Opting instead to focus on its foods division, it announced a merger with Safeway in the same year. It was later renamed Safeway Limited and exists today within the Wm. Morrison Supermarkets group.
