Glen Scotia
Glen Scotia is the second-oldest operational distillery in the Campbeltown region of Scotland and one of the smallest in the country. It was originally founded under the name Scotia in 1832 before being renamed by the Bloch Brothers who acquired it in the 1930s. Its subsequently changed hand multiple times over the remainder of the century and spent the latter half of both the 1980s and 1990s in mothballs before achieving some stability under ownership of Sandy Bulloch's Glen Catrine Bonded Warehouse.
Today the distillery is owned by the Loch Lomond Group, who bought it in 2014. Its production is traditionally a non-peated single malt, however it also produces a heavily-peated new make during a 6-week period each year.
The Glen Scotia single malt brand was introduced in the 1960 while under the ownership of A. Gillies & Co (Distillers) Ltd. The company initially offered an 8- and 12-year-old age statement in flask-style glass bottles, later introducing a 5-year-old for its Italian distributors as well. Despite A. Gillies & Co being acquired by Amalgamated Distilled Products in 1970, it remained the licensee for the distillery and its name was one of the few constants for the brand which underwent several packaging redesigns and range changes over the next two decades. The last of these was under Glen Catrine Bonded Warehouse ownership, where an 8- and 14-year-old were offered in the same squat green bottles the company used for its Littlemill brand at the time.
Those age statements were discontinued in favour of a sole 12-year-old as Glen Scotia was rebranded and relaunched in 2005. It remained the sole offering until another redesign in 2012, now featuring screen-printed bottles and additional 10-, 16-, 18- and 21-year-old releases as part of its core range. Short-lived however, the brand and core range was refreshed and relaunched again in 2015 following the purchase of the distillery by the Loch Lomond Group, and it is this version that is still in use today.
The current proprietary bottlings still comprise a broad range of age statements, joined by expressions called Victoriana, Campbeltown Harbour and Double Cask.
