Barton Inc
Barton, Inc. was an American holding company founded in 1987 by Ellis M Goodman in order to acquire Barton Brands Ltd from the Argyll Group in Scotland. The latter was divesting from its drinks division at the time after failing to acquire the Distillers Company. Goodman was the president of Barton Brands and headed up a management buyout, returning the company to American ownership having had Scottish parent companies since 1982.
The acquisition of Barton Brands gave the company a portfolio of whisky interests that included the Barton distillery in Kentucky (now Barton 1792) and the Littlemill and Glen Scotia distilleries in Scotland, which were operated through a subsidiary called Gibson International. Barton, Inc. was later sold to Canandaigua Wine Company in 1993.
