Barton Brands
Barton Brands is a former American whiskey company that was founded in Illinois in 1933 by Oscar Getz and Lester Ableson. The company owned what is now called the Barton 1792 distillery in Kentucky, and also had Canadian and Scotch whisky interests over the years. In 1982 it was acquired by Amalgamated Distilled Products in Scotland, which subsequently became the Argyll Group. Primarily a food company, it opted to divest its distilling businesses in 1987 and Barton Brands president, Ellis M Goodman, ran a management buyout that saw the company returned to American ownership under the newly formed Barton, Inc.
It was then acquired in 1993 by Canandaigua Wine Company (later known as Constellation Brands) who sold it to Sazerac Company in 2009.
