Fortune Brands
Founded
1997
Fortune Brands was an American conglomerate with an important spirits division in addition to its holdings in tobacco, insurance, golf, and home and hardware. It was originally established as American Brands in 1969, changing its name in 1997.
The company's whisky holdings were operated by Beam Global Spirits & Wine, which were significantly bolstered in 2005 by the acquisition of Canadian Club, Laphroaig, Maker's Mark and Teacher's from Allied Domecq following its takeover by Pernod Ricard. In 2011, Fortune Brands was split up and its beverages division became and independent company known as Beam, Inc.
