Glenglassaugh
Glenglassaugh is a malt distillery in the eastern Highland region, located just outside the village of Portsoy. Established in 1874, it is today part of The Benriach Distillery Company group, a subsidiary of the American-based Brown-Foreman Corporation since 2016.
The distillery produces a highly individual single malt style that was not always found to be useful by blenders, resulting in a somewhat turbulent existence in the 20th century that was marred by closures. So much so in fact that many believed its 1986 shuttering by Highland Distillers would be its last, however it has thrived in the modern single malt market since its surprise resurrection by the Scaent Group in 2008.
Perhaps owing to an unfavourable perception among many blending companies who struggled to marry its unique spirit, Highland Distillers instead opted to sell Glenglassaugh as a single malt in the years around and following its closure, launching the brand in the mid-1980s. Initially available as a non-age statement, a 12-year-old was later added to the range as well. Discontinued in the 1990s however, the only other distillery bottling from the Highland Distillers era was as part of the short-lived Family Silver range in 1998, followed by a handful of limited editions in the latter years of its ownership by Edrington Group.
When re-opened in 2008, the express intention of its new owners was to promote the distillery as a single malt brand and it released a number of impressive age statements from its warehoused stock alongside various spirit drinks to showcase its new production. Its first core range release was the non-age statement Revival, introduced in 2012 and following its acquisition by The Benriach Distillery Company, joined by Evolution and Torfa in 2013 and 2014, respectively.
Those three remained the flagship releases and until a new brand identity and core range was launched in 2023. Still a trinity of expressions, the portfolio includes the non-peated Sandend and lightly-peated Portsoy, joined by the return of a 12-year-old as the first permanent age statement of the post-Highland Distillers era.
