Glentauchers
Glentauchers is a large malt distillery in Speyside and is located on the outskirts of Keith. Built to serve the needs of blenders, it role has never changed throughout its history and it is currently part of the Chivas Brothers division of Pernod Ricard where it provides fillings for the Ballantine's brand.
The distillery was built in 1898 as a joint venture by James Buchanan & Co and W.P. Lowrie, with the former taking full ownership in 1906. It was then merged into the Distillers Company (DCL) along with the rest of the Buchanan-Dewar group in 1925. DCL then licensed the distillery back to James Buchanan & Co where it continued to be a key component of the Black & White blend until closed down in 1985. It found its way into Pernod Ricard hands through a series of mergers following the acquisition of the distillery by Allied Distillers in 1989.
The first distillery bottlings of Glentauchers single malt were only briefly produced in the 1970s and 1980s by James Buchanan & Co. Elusive, these were mostly for the French market and are rarely seen. In addition, the Glentauchers brand was one of several licensed to Gordon & MacPhail by the Distillers Company, a tradition that continued under subsequent ownership and the Elgin bottler continue to market a variation of the branding as part of their Distillery Labels series.
Current owners, Pernod Ricard, mostly use Glentauchers malt for its Ballantine's blends. As such, its single malt has been bottled by them using Ballantine's branding but so far never using the distillery's own.
