Glenlivet is a Speyside malt distillery located in Minmore. It was founded by George Smith who was the first in the Glenlivet parish to hold a legal license to distil following the passing of the Excise Act in 1823, acquiring his the following year. His original distillery was called Upper Drummin, and he built a second at Delnabo before opening Glenlivet in 1859.

The distillery was run by descendants of the Smith family for over 100 years, however was eventually acquired by the Seagram Company of Canada in 1977. Following the demise of Seagram in 2001, Glenlivet is now part of Pernod Ricard where it is positioned as the flagship single malt of its Chivas Brothers Scotch whisky division.

Glenlivet single malt has long been regarded as one of the finest in Speyside and as a result, its malt was popularly bottled in un-blended form by a number of the blending companies that were its customers. So much so in fact, that a number of these acquired licenses from George & J.G. Smith to bottle its single malt using the official branding which at the time featured the company name and "Glenlivet Whisky" set above and below, respectively, an illustration of a resting lion. These company's most prominently included Archibald Campbell, Hope & King and Gordon & MacPhail, the latter of which still has permission to use the livery today to bottle Glenlivet for its Distillery Labels range.

Despite having successfully obtained the legal right to sole use of the term "The Glenlivet" in 1884, the distillery did not incorporate it into their labels until after the second world war when the brand as we know it today took shape. Despite slight tweaks over the decades, the off-yellow labels used by the distillery hardly changed for the rest of the century and neither did its core range age statement, the 12-year-old. It was replaced as the entry level product in 2015 by the Founder's Reserve, by which time it had been joined by a 15-, 18-, 21 and 25-year-old as well.

Following a relaunch in 2019, the Glenlivet core range is comprised of the Founder's Reserve alongside two other non-age statements called Caribbean Reserve and the cognac cask-aged Captain's Reserve. The classic 12-, 15- and 18-year-old age statements are also retained, subtitled Double Oak, French Oak Reserve and Batch Reserve, respectively.
