Dallas Dhu
Dallas Dhu is a former malt distillery located just to the south of Forres in Scotland's Speyside region. It was originally built as Dallasmore in 1898 and production commenced the following year. It was renamed Dallas Dhu under the ownership of the blenders, Wright & Greig, who made its malt a key component of their famous Rhoderick Dhu brand. Several ownership changes brought the distillery into the control of the Distillers Company, who closed it in 1983.
In 1986, the site was acquired from DCL by the Historic Buildings and Monuments division of the Scottish Office (now the Scottish Government), and it re-opened to the public as a museum of whisky and distilling two years later. The attraction was run by Historic Environment Scotland (formerly Historic Scotland) until 2024 when it was sold to Aceo Distillers Ltd, which intends to re-open it in 2025.
While under the ownership of the Distillers Company, the license for Dallas Dhu was assigned to the blending operation, Benmore Distilleries. The company produced popular Scotch brands such as Benmore and Gaelic Prince, and very little interest in marketing single malt. As a result, no distillery bottlings were produced during its years of operation. The first official releases were produced by United Distillers between 1995 and 1997, with four bottlings released under its Rare Malts Selection label.
An official Dallas Dhu brand finally arrived in 1999 however, when Historic Scotland bottled a special single cask for the distillery's centenary. This was promptly followed by a second single cask to commemorate the turn of the new millennium, and another for the 400th anniversary of the Union of the Crowns in 2003. The brand image was refreshed twice in the late 2000s, however further bottlings have been sparse.
