Bowmore
Islay’s oldest working distillery, Bowmore was established in 1779 and is now regarded as one of the most popular malts not only on Islay, but in the whole of Scotland. The distillery was acquired by Stanley P. Morrison in 1963, ushering in an era of iconic single malts, and is today part of the Suntory Group after the Japanese company acquired a majority ownership in 1994.
The distillery produces a medium-peated single malt whisky and is one of the few remaining Scottish distilleries to use its own floor maltings, providing them with 40% of their requirements. It also has on-site ageing warehouses that include its legendary No.1 Vaults.
The Bowmore single malt brand first appeared in the 1960s following the takeover of the distillery by Stanley P. Morrison. The distillery name was printed on the labels in a gothic font and were available in non-age statement and 7-year-old expressions. The packaging was then updated in the 1973 to incorporate green glass bottles and a new sailing ship-adorned label. Throughout this period all the bottles continued to bear the Sherriff's Bowmore Distillery Ltd subsidiary name on their labels.
The brand was redesigned in 1979 for the distillery's bicentenary, introducing new dumpy-shaped brown bottles and replacing the 7- with a 12-year-old offering. A further rebranding took place in 1988 to coincide with the reorganisation of Stanley P. Morrison as Morrison Bowmore Distillers and introduced an extensive new core range in elegant screen-printed bottles. This era also saw the release of the first travel retail-only bottlings.
The current version of the brand - despite having received several slight redesigns to its packaging - retains largely the same aesthetic themes today in terms of its label and bottle shape. The core range is headlined by a 12- 15- and 18-year-old which have equivalent travel retail exclusive counterparts. The distillery also releases regular limited edition and single cask bottlings.
