Ben Wyvis
Ben Wyvis was one of the shortest-lived distilleries of the modern age, constructed within the Invergordon grain complex in 1965. A malt distillery, its purpose was the provision of fillings for blends however it was left surplus to requirements when the company opted to focus its production at Bruichladdich and Tamnavulin instead.
It was demolished after just 11 years in operation. Its legacy lives on however through a clutch of rare bottlings of its single malt, and its stills which were acquired by J&A Mitchell and installed at Glengyle in 2000.
Given its short lifespan it is unsurprising that Ben Wyvis single malt was never officially bottled during its lifetime. Interestingly the first Ben Wyvis branded single malt was not produced at the distillery at all. Instead, it was brand name used to market a different Highland single malt in a series produced by Invergordon Distillers for Gall & Gall in the Netherlands.
The first distillery bottlings of Ben Wyvis appeared in the late 1990s as part of the Stillman's Dram series from Whyte & Mackay, shortly followed the launch of what was presumably believed to be the first and last example of the Ben Wyvis single malt brand, a small batch release called The Final Resurrection. This proved presumptuous however, and a subsequent bottling labelled as "the last casks" would follow in 2002.
