Michter's (PA)
The original Michter's distillery is located in near Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania and is a site of huge historical significance to American whiskey. It traces its history back to 1753 when rye whiskey was distilled there by John and Michael Shenk, however its rise to prominence occurred post-Prohibition when it was run by Louis Forman. He distilled the first batch of the Michter's brand there in 1951, with the name being a portmanteau of those of his sons, Michael and Peter.
The distillery closed after filing for bankruptcy in 1989, however its name has gone on to develop a cult status as the source of the legendary A.H. Hirsch Reserve bourbon. The Michter's brand also lives on, produced by Chatham Imports in Kentucky alongside other brand names such as Shenk's and Bomberger that also nod to this distillery's important history.
