John's Lane
A former Irish whiskey distillery that was established in 1791 by James Power at his pub on Dublin's Thomas Street. Finding early success, he relocated it to a larger premises next-door on John's Lane shortly after the turn of the century and the company was run by his son, John Power. Producing traditional pot-distilled Irish whiskies, the distillery became one of the first to sell it by-the-bottle in 1886, a brand that became known as Power's Gold Label on account of its distinctive packaging.
In 1966 John Power & Son merged with John Jameson & Son and Cork Distilleries to form Irish Distillers, which introduced sweeping changes in order to navigate its way out of a downturn in the Irish whiskey market. The first was to reformulate the Jameson brand a blended whiskey, and some grain whiskey from John's Lane was used in early examples. Another was the decision to consolidate all production at a new distillery in Midleton, Cork and John's Lane was closed for good in 1976.
