Glenburgie
Glenburgie is a malt distillery in Speyside that makes up several in the holdings of the Chivas Brothers division of French multinational, Pernod Ricard. It was built in 1810 by William Paul and became the first Scottish distillery to be wholly-owned by Canadian distilling giant, Hiram Walker-Gooderham & Worts, through its acquisition of the remaining shares of J&G Stodart in 1936 (it has bought an initial 60% in 1930). This was the beginning of its long-association to the Ballantine's blends.
The distillery remains so important to the best-selling Ballantine's brand today, that very little is spared for single malt bottling. Most sightings in that respect come from independent bottlers, some of whom have also released examples of Glencraig which was produced at Glenburgie on Lomond stills between 1958 and 1981.
Official single malt bottlings of Glenburgie were first produced as early as the 1940s when 12-year-old bottlings labelled "Glen-burgie" were produced for "21" Brands Inc, the New York importer that held the Ballantine's distribution contract in the US. It was then reintroduced in the 1970s, again as an export brand as a sole 5-year-old expression was sold in Italy through the 1980s until discontinued by Allied Lyons when it bought Hiram Walker-Gooderham & Worts in 1987.
A dedicated Glenburgie brand has never been marketed since, however some sporadic distilling bottlings have been released. Allied Distillers released a rare one-off 18-year-old and a 15-year-old was also bottled as part of package of the same age statement from several of its other distilleries in 2000. The first Chivas Brothers bottling was a 195th anniversary release in 2005, followed by several inclusions in its Distillery Reserve Collection and Cask Strength Edition collections.
As of 2017 there has been a ready supply of Glenburgie single malts, however it is released under Ballantine's branding alongside Glentauchers and Miltonduff. A specially licensed Glenburgie brand has also been produced by the independent bottler, Gordon & MacPhail, over the years as part of what it now calls its Distillery Labels range.
