Akkeshi
Akkeshi distillery is one of several born out of the explosion in demand and popularity of Japanese single malt whisky in the 21st century. The distillery was opened by Keiichi Toita who had a passion for the peated single malt Scotch produced on the legendary Isle of Islay.
Operational since 2016, Akkeshi is located in the town of the same name on the island of Hokkaido, specially selected for its similar climate to those of the Scottish Outer Hebrides. Its peated and non-peated single malt is all aged on the island and the distillery's wood policy features rare Mizunara oak barrels in addition to traditional ex-bourbon and sherry casks.
The distillery's brand, The Akkeshi, debuted in 2018 and its portfolio includes both its own single malt as well as several blended Japanese whiskies. The inaugural bottlings were known as the New Born Foundations series and showcased the distillery's maturing single malt spirit across three releases, followed by a blend for the fourth and final instalment.
The first fully-mature Akkeshi single malt release was introduced in February 2020, titled Sarorunkamuy. The distillery also launched its inaugural serialised collection, the 24 Solar Terms series, later that year.
