Scottish & Universal Investments
Founded
1948
Scottish & Universal Investments Ltd (often referred to as SUITS) as a holding company established in 1948 in order to acquire a stake in the Edinburgh department store, House of Fraser. It was founded by Sir Hugh Fraser and was later converted to a public company in 1960. The money generated from this allowed it to go on the acquisition trail, mostly buying up subsidiary interests whose products it could stock. This eventually saw it purchase Dalmore, Whyte & Mackay Ltd and its associated assets in 1972.
The company was bought over by Lonhro PLC (now called Lonmin) in 1979, who dissolved it in April 2023.
