Lonhro
Lonhro PLC (Lonhro Ltd until 1982) was a British company, originally founded as London and Rhodesian Mining and Land Company in 1909. Its primary interests were in mining platinum group metals in South Africa, however it had diverse subsidiary interests across a number industries. The group was split up in 1999, with its mining activities retained by the original company (now renamed Lonmin PLC), and all non-mining asset transferred to a new entity called Lonhro Africa PLC (now trading again as simply Lonhro).
The business had Scotch whisky interests following its 1979 acquisition of Scottish & Universal Investments, a subsidiary of which was the Whyte & Mackay group. It later sold them to the US-based Brent Walker Group in 1988.
