The oldest operational distillery on the isle of Islay, built in 1779. Today it is part of the Suntory Group, having been acquired by the Japanese company in 1994. Under their ownership is has been nurtured into one of the most collectable names in Scotch whisky.

The company became the German agent for William Cadenhead in the 1980s, who helped it produce its first own-branded independent bottlings shortly after.
