LDI 1988 Barrel Proof 23 Year Old Rye

The history of MGP distillery has its roots in the mid-19th century, however it is best known for its association to Seagram, who purchased it at the close of Prohibition in 1933. Located in Lawrenceburg, Indiana, the distillery provided whiskey and grain neutral spirits for many of the Canadian distilling giants products for the rest of the 20th century. When an ill-advised move into the entertainment industry saw Seagram collapse in the early 2000s, much of their assets, including the Lawrenceburg distillery were bought up by Pernod-Ricard. They announced in 2006 that they intended to close it, however ended up selling it instead to a holding company in Trinidad called CL Financial. They renamed it LDI (Lawrenceburg Distillers Indiana). It was not long however before the new owners would go bust as well, and the distillery was again sold, this time to MGP Ingredients, who renamed it in the process. The company produced and markets some of its own brands, but its main line of business is a huge contract-distilling operation. Among these are a number of well-regarded grain recipes, and several bourbons. Among its biggest customers are Diageo, and former owners, Pernod-Ricard, alongside an extensive list of independent boutique brands. In 2021 it was announced that MGP had acquired Luxco, which would provide it with a new national distribution for its Indiana-produced brands, but also facilitated it with the Lux Row distillery, which opened in 2018.

This 1988 vintage whiskey was distilled by Seagram using a mashbill of 95% rye. It was bottled in 2011 to commemorate the LDI era, which ran from July 2007 until December 2011. Unusually labelled with \"thanks for being part of the success,\" this was gifted to the staff prior to the takeover by MGP.

A.H. Hirsch Reserve 1974 15 Year Old / 1st Release

A legendary bottle of bourbon that has had a whole book written about itself: The Best Bourbon You'll Never Taste by Charles K Cowdery.

Distilled in Spring 1974, this bourbon was bottled from a single 400 barrel batch commissioned by Adolph H. Hirsch and distilled under contract at Michter's distillery (then known as Pennco), just outside Schaefferstown, Pennsylvania. Hirsch was a former Schenley executive who had dealings with Michter's during his time there, and it is believed he commissioned the whiskey as financial favour to the distillery, and actually had little plans for its use. So, it lay ageing in the warehouses for much longer than generally expected for a bourbon at the time. 

When Michter’s distillery finally closed in 1989, Hirsch was well into his nineties, and rather than engage in exigency of rehoming what no longer served its purpose to him, he instead sought to find a buyer for it. Fearing the arduous task of finding a buyer for what was considered an “over-aged” batch of whiskey, Hirsch was fortunate in that one of his old Schenley contacts called Bob Gottesman knew a man in Kentucky who was looking for exactly that, Gordon Hue.

Responsibility for the early bottling was entrusted to Julian Van Winkle III at his Old Commonwealth site in Lawrenceburg. However, his creation of the Pappy Van Winkle brand and subsequent partnership with the Sazerac Company in 2002 also saw bottling of the Hirsch Reserve moved briefly to Buffalo Trace. This is one of Van Winkle's first Lawrenceburg bottlings, produced on 26th February 1990. Van Winkle's ledgers show that he was drip-fed orders for the A.H. Hirsch Reserve, and only produced limited case numbers to order when requested by Hue. This has lead to a variety of different bottlings at different ages. This is one of two bottlings of the A.H. Hirsch Reserve as 15 year old (although the second was actually 16 by the time it was bottled). This release features the label with block text, similar to the Van Winkle Special Reserve releases produced around the same time (the second has a script style label). The majority of the the bourbon was later placed into steel tanks shortly after this, in order to prevent futher ageing. Van Winkle bottled some leftover casks at advanced ages, but the majority of the A.H. Hirsch Reserve was bottled from the tanks as a 16 year old in 2003.

Gordon Hue, who had maintained exclusive distribution rights to the Hirsch product despite the Van Winkle and Sazerac connections, eventually sold the brand to Preiss Imports who moved the subsequent and final bottling (technically re-bottling) to Kentucky Bourbon Distillers' Willett facility.

In his book Cowdery refers to the bourbon as one of the \"best whiskeys I've ever tasted.\"

Mash bill contains 75% corn, 13% rye, and 12% malted barley.

This is the 20 year old red wax bottling in Van Winkle's trademark green-glass cognac-style bottles. This is the only release bottled from the spirit when it was 20 years old, and the oldest too.

Echo Spring 1916 Bottled in Bond Bourbon / Prohibition Era Bottling

Distilled in 1916, this bourbon was protected in bond from Prohibition Act of 1920, which made alcohol production and consumption illegal. The Volstead Act was in place between 1920 and 1933, and during this period, some distillers were bale to continue to bottle their whiskey as a medicinal product. Only doctors could prescribe these 1 pint bottles, and bakers were also given a weekly ration of whiskey and rum to use in their cooking.

The whiskey was distilled at the A. Mayfield & Co distillery in Kentucky, which was part of the J M Atherton Company, established in the mid-19th century. They were eventually acquired (likely under severe pressure) by the nefarious Whiskey Trust. The Trust, officially known as the Distiller's Securities Corporation had been set up initially to consolidate and bring regulation to the US whiskey industry, but quickly developed a reputation for strong arming and bullying distillery owners into making deals with them. Atherton distilleries were run on the Trust's behalf by Julius Kessler, but were forced to close in 1920 with the enactment of Prohibition.

The Whiskey Trust later reinvented itself as National Distillers in 1924, and heavily invested in the American Medicinal Spirits Company, providing them in this instance with the Echo Spring brand and the Mayfield distillery's stock. They bottled this in 1927 using their Kentucky Distilleries & Warehouse Co subsidiary.

National Distillers would go on to become one of America's \"big four\" whiskey companies following the repeal of the Prohibition Act in 1933.

This has lead to a variety of different bottlings at different ages. This is the second batch of the A.H. Hirsch Reserve bottled as a 16 year old, and is affectionately known as the \"Gold Wax.\" The same label was used by Buffalo Trace for the 2003 release, although that time featured a gold foil seal. Van Winkle was a fan of the dripping wax aesthetic, but this was a registered trademark of Maker's Mark in the US. He commonly used the motif on special export releases for a markets where this law did not apply.

Produced in 2009, Preiss Imports had their remaining stock of the Buffalo Trace bottles decanted into these hand-blown glasses and presented them mahogany humidor boxes. There were only 1000 made, and the bottling was done at Willett by Kentucky Bourbon Distillers.

Legends of the Wild West 15 Year Old Historic Bourbon 96 Proof

This is a \"historic bourbon,\" aged 15 years and titled Legends of the Wild West and featuring 19th century frontiersman and US army officer Kit Carson on the label. This is almost certainly a Kentucky Bourbon Distillers bottling, although the font style used for the Kit Carson is indicative of the company now known as Preservation Distillers.

Preservation is owned by the Allied Lomar in California, who's other products include Very Olde St Nick, Rare Perfection, Wattie Boone and the Vintage Bourbon and Rye bottles. They have been sourcing bourbon and bottling it for several decades, and they are instantly recognisable from their uniform use of the same cursive script-style typeface. Marci Palatella was Julian Van Winkle III's agent in the Japanese market for many years, and their early bottlings were contracted to him at his Old Commonwealth distillery.

The Van Winkle partnership with in the early 2000's ended this agreement however, with the production of bottles such as this moved to Willett distillery, where they were bottled by its owners, Evan Kulsveen's Kentucky Bourbon Distillers. The stills at Willett were silent at this point and KBD were sourcing most of their whiskey from Heaven Hill.

Preservation Distillers have opened their very own distillery in Bardstown Kentucky in 2018, which will produce around 3-4 barrels of pot distilled bourbon per day.

Eagle Rare 15 Year Old 107 Proof 1990

Eagle Rare is a historic bourbon brand, originally developed by Seagram in 1975 in an effort to capitalise on what it felt were the popular marketing motifs used by Wild Turkey. Distilled at their Four Roses distillery, the recipe was devised by Charles L. Beam and was sold as a 10 year old with both a 90 and 101 proof version available. Seagram held ambitions beyond the drinks industry however, and in an effort to diversify their portfolio in the 1980s, they sold Eagle Rare along with the Benchmark brand to the Sazerac Company. They initially bottled it using barrels sourced from Heaven Hill, but later moved production to Buffalo Trace in 1992.

An old 1990 bottling, this was produced by the Sazerac company, who purchased the brand from Seagram in 1989 the year prior, meaning this is one of th rare examples released using sourced whiskey from Heaven Hill in Bardstown.

Evan Williams 1969 23 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon

The Evan Williams brand was launched in 1957 and takes its name from an 18th century Welsh immigrant, often cited as Kentucky's first distiller. Not to be confused with another Heaven Hill brand, Elijah Craig, named after the man first presumed to have distilled bourbon whiskey.

This 23 year old was distilled back in 1969.

Heaven Hill was established by a group of private investors in 1935, following the repeal of Prohibition a few years earlier. Among the founders was distiller, Joseph L. Beam, and a member of the Shapira family. As the company grew, the Shapira's eventually acquired sole ownership of it, and their descendants still run it today. In a similar dynastic vein, Joe Beam remained master distiller despite the Shapira takeover, and members of his family have occupied the role ever since. This was produced at the Old Heavenhill Springs distillery, later renamed simply as Heaven Hill, which was located in Bardstown, Kentucky. It was sadly lost in a devastating fire in 1996, and bourbon made there has become increasingly sought after as the years pass. The company had no distillery for the next three years, but were permitted to rent stills at Jim Beam and Brown-Forman in order to maintain production. They eventually acquired the newly refurbished Bernheim distillery from Diageo in 1999, which has been their home ever since.

It has been released annually every year as part of the Buffalo Trace Antique Collection, a selection of whiskies collated and in some cases created to pay homage to the history of the company and its brands.

It was then purchased by the legendary Edmund Haynes Taylor Jr in 1870, who named it OFC (Old Fashioned Copper) and invested heavily in its modernisation. So much so in fact that he declared himself bankrupt after just seven years, and George T. Stagg stepped in to rescue it, becoming its owner in 1878. He ran the distillery until his retirement in the 1890s, and it was renamed in his honour in 1904. Having survived Prohibition, it was bought up by the Schenley company in 1933, who ran it as part of their extensive portfolio for the next fifty years, eventually selling it to Age International. The latter's new Japanese ownership in 1992 had no interest in it (only in its brands), and immediately sold it to the Sazerac company, who renamed it Buffalo Trace in 1999.

Elijah Craig 1992 Single Barrel 18 Year Old / Kenwood Liquors

Elijah Craig is named after an 18th century pastor, often cited (although probably incorrectly) as the first man to distil bourbon in the US due to his tenuous accreditation for pioneering the use of charred barrels in maturation. The Elijah Craig brand was trademarked by Commonwealth Distillers in 1960, who sold it to current owners, Heaven Hill in 1976. It would be ten years before they would bottle it for the first time however, somewhat controversially launching the flagship 12 year old in 1986 when the US bourbon market, which historically preferred younger age-statements, was already in one of its lowest troughs in popularity. The gamble paid off however, reshaping the image of Heaven Hill as a premium producer, which prevails to this day with the Elijah Craig label remaining at the forefront of its output.

Elijah Craig 1990 Single Barrel 21 Year Old

Elijah Craig is named after an 18th century pastor, often cited (although probably incorrectly) as the first man to distil bourbon in the US due to his tenuous accreditation for pioneering the use of charred barrels in maturation. The Elijah Craig brand was trademarked by Commonwealth Distillers in 1960, who sold it to current owners, Heaven Hill in 1976. It would be ten years before they would bottle it for the first time however, somewhat controversially launching the flagship 12 year old in 1986 when the US bourbon market, which historically preferred younger age-statements, was already in one of its lowest troughs in popularity. The gamble paid off however, reshaping the image of Heaven Hill as a premium producer, which prevails to this day with the Elijah Craig label remaining at the forefront of its output.

Elmer T Lee Single Barrel Kentucky Bourbon 2011 / Taoism Whiskey

Elmer T. Lee is a bourbon brand from the portfolio of Age International, the company formed by former Fleischmann's Distilling director's, Bob Baranaskas and Ferdie Falke. They had approached Schenley in the early 1980s with a view to purchasing its Old Charter brand, but were instead offered Ancient Age and the George T. Stagg distillery where it was produced. The deal was completed in 1983, two years before the retirement of George T. Stagg master distiller, Elmer T. Lee, who had served there for 36 years, working his way from the bottom up. One of his final pioneering triumphs before doing so was the introduction of mass produced single barrel bourbon through the creation of the Blanton's brand in 1984. In a fitting tribute, the following year saw the distillery launch the Elmer T. Lee single barrel in his honour. At the time of his death in 2013, Elmer was one of only two living master distillers with a bourbon named after them.

The popularity of these products was particularly high in Japan, coinciding with a market boom for American whiskey there in the 1980s. In 1991, with Age International in some financial trouble, a Japanese company called Takaro Shuzo stepped in and acquired a 22.5% stake in the company. In an unusual series of events, they then scuppered a deal the following year that was to see the remaining shares sold to Heublein (a subsidiary of Grand Metropolitan). Their deal the year before had included a 30 day right of refusal to purchase the shares for themselves should they be put up for sale. With the deal all but done, the Japanese company stepped in on the final day of the window to acquire full control of the company. As it turned out, their only interest was in the brands, and they had used the 30 days to negotiate a deal with the Sazerac Company of  New Orleans. This saw the American company take ownership of the distillery (which they renamed Buffalo Trace in 1999), as well as the exclusive production and US distribution rights for the Age International labels. This is an arrangement that is still in place today.

Interestingly, the Buffalo Trace name is borrowed from the DBA (\"doing business as\") name that Age International used to bottle Elmer T. Lee in the 1980s and 1990s.

Ezra Brooks 150 Month Old Bareknuckle Fighter Decanter 1971

Ezra Brooks is perhaps best known for having been taken to court of copycat accusations by Jack Daniel's in the 1960s, with similarities in everything from the bottle and label to the (square/ black and white) to the advertising slogans (\"there isn't quite enough to go around\" vs. \"there just ain't enuf to go around\").

Ezra Brooks is a brand that was never tied to a distillery, although it is associated for most of its history with Hoffman, which is the site later renamed Old Commonwealth by Julien Van Winkle III, responsible for bottling much of today's bourbon royalty, such as the A.H Hirsch Reserve, Very Olde St. Nick and Old Rip Van Winkle.

This is an early 1970s example was produced at Hoffman distillery and is an example of the many cermaic decanter released in that decade in an attempt to boost dwindling sales.

Medley acquired the brand in 1979 when Hoffman stopped distilling, and bottled it up until the early 1990s under the ownership of United Distillers. Today Ezra Brooks is distilled and bottled by Heaven Hill for Luxco.

Echo Spring 6 Year Old Kentucky Straight Bourbon Half Pint 1953

Echo Spring is a historic bourbon brand, first produced at the Murphy-Barber distillery in Clermont in 1881. The brand is still in production today, produced by Heaven Hill.

This is an old 1950s bottling, produced by the Schenley company at their Bernheim distillery.

Schenley was organised in 1920 by Louis Rosenstiel as the Cincinnati Distributing Corp. It was one of just six companies granted a license by the US government to bottle medicinal whiskey, alongside Brown-Forman, Frankfort Distilleries, the A. Ph. Stitzel distillery, the American Medicinal Spirits Company, and James Thompson & Brother. In the same year, Rosenstiel acquired the Joseph S. Finch distillery in Pennsylvania, its stock and its Golden Wedding brand, which would go onto become one of the flagship labels of Schenley in the 20th century. In 1922, Rosenstiel met Winston Churchill while holidaying in France, and the future British Prime Minister advised him to begin preparing for the eventuality that the unpopular Prohibition act would be repealed. Rosenstiel then spent the next decade accruing assets in the whiskey industry and by the time his foresight finally paid off in 1933, Schenley were the owners of numerous distilleries including George T. Stagg, James E. Pepper, and the Squibb distillery in Indiana. They added the famous Bernheim distillery to the portfolio in 1937, and the year prior made their first play in the Scotch market by becoming the US distributor for John Dewar & Sons. Rosenstiel's spirits empire dominated much of the market share of American whiskey for the next forty years through brands like I.W. Harper and Cream of Kentucky, before he sold his controlling stake to the Glen Alden company in 1968. He passed away eight years later, and in 1987, Schenley was bought over by United Distillers, newly formed through a merger of the Distillers Company Ltd (DCL) and Arthur Bell & Sons after both were acquired by Guinness that year.

Early Times Kentucky Straight Bourbon 1978

Early Times is a historic bourbon brand produced for the majority of its time by Brown-Forman at their distillery in Louisville. It was announced in June 2020 however that they had sold the long-serving brand to the Sazerac company.

The origins of the Brown-Forman company date back to 1870 when George Garvin Brown went into business with his brother, John Thompson Street Brown. The pair had struck upon the innovation of selling whiskey in sealed glass bottles in order to ensure quality control to capitalise on the medicinal whiskey trade in the 19th century. They introduced their Old Forester brand in the same year in order to do just that. The two brothers’ business relationship quickly deteriorated however, and George Garvin founded a new venture with his accountant, George Forman, taking the Old Forester label with him. His early investment in the medicinal whiskey trade paid huge dividends when National Prohibition was enacted in 1920, seeing Brown-Forman granted a license to continue making whiskey. It was one of just six, alongside Glenmore, Frankfort Distilleries, Schenley, A. Ph. Stitzel and the American Medicinal Spirits Co. The company then bought the Early Times distillery in 1923 in order to make use of its huge stocks, and for nearly 100 years it was one of its flagship brands. Brown-Forman emerged from Prohibition as one of America's powerhouse distilling companies, adding the Labrot & Graham distillery (later Woodford Reserve) to its portfolio in the 1940s, and the Jack Daniel distillery in Tennessee in the 1950s. The company remains a global player in the whisky industry to this day, opening a new Old Forester distillery in 2018, and acquiring a foothold in the Scotch market in 2016 through its takeover of Benriach, Glenglassaugh and Glendronach.

It would be ten years before they would bottle it for the first time however, somewhat controversially launching the flagship 12 year old in 1986 when the US bourbon market, which historically preferred younger age-statements, was already in one of its lowest troughs in popularity. The gamble paid off however, reshaping the image of Heaven Hill as a premium producer, which prevails to this day with the Elijah Craig label remaining at the forefront of its output.

Affectionately known as \"the grenade,\" the Barrel Select in their distinctive 20cl bottles are excluive to the Heaven Hill Bourbon Herritage Centre in Bardstown. A barrel proof offering, they are distilled at Bernheim and bottled by Heaven Hill at 125 US proof.

Bernheim is a historic Kentucky distillery. It was established by the Bernheim Brothers in the late 19th century, before passing into the hands of the Schenley company following the repeal of Prohibition. When Schenley were bought over by United Distillers in 1987, the distillery was rebuilt as the new owners looked to consolidate their production to a single facility. When United Distillers became Diageo in 1997, the new parent company were interested in bourbon, and sold the distillery to Heaven Hill. Heaven Hill were established in 1935, but their long-serving Bardstown distillery was lost in a devastating fire in 1996. Homeless for three years, the company acquired Bernheim in 1999, and have produced all of their whiskey there ever since.

Elmer T Lee Single Barrel Kentucky Bourbon 2017

Elmer T. Lee is a bourbon brand from the portfolio of Age International, the company formed by former Fleischmann's Distilling director's, Bob Baranaskas and Ferdie Falke. They had approached Schenley in the early 1980s with a view to purchasing its Old Charter brand, but were instead offered Ancient Age and the George T. Stagg distillery where it was produced. The deal was completed in 1983, two years before the retirement of George T. Stagg master distiller, Elmer T. Lee, who had served there for 36 years, working his way from the bottom up. One of his final pioneering triumphs before doing so was the introduction of mass produced single barrel bourbon through the creation of the Blanton's brand in 1984. In a fitting tribute, the following year saw the distillery launch the Elmer T. Lee single barrel in his honour. At the time of his death in 2013, Elmer was one of only two living master distillers with a bourbon named after them.

The popularity of these products was particularly high in Japan, coinciding with a market boom for American whiskey there in the 1980s. In 1991, with Age International in some financial trouble, a Japanese company called Takaro Shuzo stepped in and acquired a 22.5% stake in the company. In an unusual series of events, they then scuppered a deal the following year that was to see the remaining shares sold to Heublein (a subsidiary of Grand Metropolitan). Their deal the year before had included a 30 day right of refusal to purchase the shares for themselves should they be put up for sale. With the deal all but done, the Japanese company stepped in on the final day of the window to acquire full control of the company. As it turned out, their only interest was in the brands, and they had used the 30 days to negotiate a deal with the Sazerac Company of  New Orleans. This saw the American company take ownership of the distillery (which they renamed Buffalo Trace in 1999), as well as the exclusive production and US distribution rights for the Age International labels. This is an arrangement that is still in place today.

Interestingly, the Buffalo Trace name is borrowed from the DBA (\"doing business as\") name that Age International used to bottle Elmer T. Lee in the 1980s and 1990s.

After the auction closing date, the highest bidder will be notified by email. Payment is required within 72hrs. The buyer can then choose to ship, store, or collect the bottle(s). Buyer fees are applied during the online checkout process.  

The seller will receive payment within 21 working days of the end of the auction, directly to their chosen bank account. Seller fees will be applied to the seller’s invoice after the auction.
