1 Mystery Speyside 1992 Refill Hogshead #1408796 26 Year Old / Glenlivet

Filled on 17 June 1992 into refill hogshead #1408796, this mystery Speyside single malt is actually from Glenlivet distillery. We have it on very good authority that this particular cask is the sister of the one used in Spirit Still's \"Give 'N' Tell\" release.

Please note that this cask was purchased on the basis that Glenlivet cannot be used on any labelling when bottled and this condition applies to the successful bidder.

The most recent re-gauging values have been taken from an invoice dated 20 March 2018:

  • RLA 98.3 Litres
  • New Bulk 191.6 Litres
  • Strength 51.4%

All relevant paperwork will accompany this purchase. Ownership of the cask will be transferred once payment is processed post auction. Any costs relating to storage, removal from storage, bottling and duty/tax payments will become the responsibility of the new owner.

The cask is currently held in a Chivas Brother's warehouse near Keith, Morayshire, where there will be an annual storage fee.

Please note if the new owner is a UK revenue trader (business), they will need to be registered with HMRC and hold a WOWGR certificate.

If they are a revenue trader outside the UK, they will need to have a Duty Representative in the UK (the Duty Rep would be registered with HMRC and there is usually an annual charge for their services)

Old Oscar Pepper 1916 Bottled in Bond Whiskey Pint / Prohibition Era Bottling

A fantastic example of a Prohibition era bottling of American whiskey. Although the Volstead Act of 1920 had banned all production, sale an consumption of alcohol in the US, a few select companies were able to acquire medicinal licenses that allowed them to continue bottling their warehoused stock. These medicinal bottlings could be prescribed by medical professionals, and bakers were also entitled to a weekly ration to cook with.

One of these companies was the Frankfort distillery. Built in 1902, the distillery was one of 6 companies to be granted a medicinal license, and subsequently bought up the stocks from many of those who did not. This included Labrot & Graham and its Old Oscar Pepper brand. This distillery had a rich history; it was built by Elijah Pepper, as the Old Oscar Pepper distillery in the early 1800s and lists James Crow, of Old Crow fame amongst its former Master Distillers. Colonel E H Taylor Jr also managed it for a time. It was revived in 1935 by R A Baker under the Labrot & Graham name, eventually being acquired by Brown-Forman in 1940. Despite then laying idle for many years, it was revived again in the mid-1990s as what we now recognise as Woodford Reserve.

The Frankfort distillery on the other hand, did not re-open after Prohibition. The company had been procured by Paul Jones & Co. in order to allow them to continue bottling the Four Roses brand. With stock stretched thin by the expanded portfolio by the end of 1920s, they contracted A. Ph. Stitzel to supply them with more from their ageing stock. This partnership saw Frankfort distillery eventually acquire the Stitzel plant in 1933, with its former owners opening the legendary Stitzel-Weller in Louisville two years later. By the late 1940s, the Frankfort distillery company had been acquired by Seagram's.

This was distilled in 1916 bottled in 1926, likely from some of the last of the Labrot & Graham whiskey in the warehouses. It was bottled in bond at the legal requirement of 100 US proof.

Hayner Private Stock 1914 Bottled in Bond Quart / Prohibition Era Bottling

This is an old bottle of Ohio whiskey, distilled in the Spring of 1914 at the Hayner distillery in in Troy. Once a powerful distilling company who claimed to be the largest mail order whiskey house in the US, they were badly affected by the Webb-Kenyon Act of 1913 which prohibited the transportation of alcohol across state lines, and were in some amount of financial distress by the time this whiskey was barrelled. Prohibition however proved to be the final nail in the coffin, and this may have been one of the last bottles the company ever produced, bottled in the same year they were liquidated in 1920, less than a year after the Volstead Act was enforced.

Although the rear label is badly damaged, you can see the remnants of the \"For Medicinal Purposes Only\" statement. Although the Prohibition act had made the distilling and sale of alcohol illegal in 1919, certain companies with existing whiskey stocks were permitted to continue bottling bottling them for use as prescriptive medicines (and a small monthly ration for bakers, which also included rum). This was not a hugely profitable endeavour though, and kept only the more financially secure distillers in business during America's 13 years dry, such as Schenley and what would eventually become National Distillers.

The Hayner distillery was registered distillery number 3, in the first district of Ohio, and is completely gone today. In its heyday, its other brands included Golden Jubilee, Tom Marshall Rye, and perhaps most recognisably, Cream of Kentucky, which was acquired by the Bernheim brothers and is a rumoured constituent of some of the Van Winkle Family Reserve Rye.

In addition to distilling, the Hayner company also patented a combination lock stopper, which was designed to prevent children (and anyone else with no knowledge of the combination), gaining access to a bottle's contents.
