Lakes Genesis / Bottle #034

The whisky has been matured first in Oloroso hogsheads and then finished in casks made of European and American oak. Finally, these whiskies were married together in Orange wine casks from the Andalusia region of Spain. In order to highlight the full spectrum of flavours that this has produced, the whisky has been bottled at cask strength.

The first 101 bottles of this new distillery's inaugural single malt are presented in a stunning glass decanter style bottle, packed neatly into a beautiful rosewood box. This is a whisky that does justice to its Scottish heritage, in a presentation that does justice to the craftsmanship of a region which is, undoubtedly, at the genesis of a true whisky heritage of its own.

Every bottle comes hand-numbered and hand-signed with a certificate of authenticity from The Lakes' master Blender, Dhavall Gandhi.

Laphroaig 1980 Moon Import / Dovr-Toutes-Mares

Moon Import was founded by Pepi Mongiardino in 1980. Heeding the advice of the late, great, Silvano Samaroli, he opted to be \"free from the big companies,\" and became the official distributor for Islay's Bruichladdich, and later Tamnavulin and Tullibardine, preferring however to procure casks from private owners. Mongiardino bottled his first whisky in 1982, titled the Half Moon series. Always beautifully labelled, Pepi is acclaimed for designing the packaging for Moon Import bottles himself, using images found in old books. The famous Birds, Animals, Costumes and Sea series were all labelled using pictures he discovered in an 18th century German encyclopaedia. These iconic designs, coupled with the quality of the liquid saw Moon Import steadily grow in popularity, and with the help of Intertrade founder, Nadi Fiori, they exported their first bottles to Japan in 2001.

An older bottling of Laphroaig. This was distilled in 1980 and bottled in 1996 for the Dovr-Toutes-Mares series, a collection of 7 single malts, all labelled with antique cartography.

Yamazaki 12 Year Old 6 x 70cl / Case

A very popular expression from Japan, now getting harder and harder to find.

Interestingly, not all of Suntory's whisky is matured at the distillery where it was produced. Larger casks such as butts and puncheons are kept at Yamazaki due to its warmer temperatures, whereas the colder climate at Hakushu distillery is better suited to Suntory's smaller casks such as barrels and hogsheads. The majority of casks however are kept at Suntory's Ohmi Ageing Cellar, a vast warehouse situated forty miles northwest of Yamazaki.

In addition to efficiently harnessing climatic conditions, this arrangement also prevents an entire distillery’s stock being lost in the event of a natural disaster – a serious possibility in an earthquake-prone area such as Japan.
