Compass Box Kensington Wine Market 25th Anniversary

Despite brands like Ballantine’s, Johnnie Walker and Chivas Regal remaining the best-selling Scotch whisky brands in the world, the blended Scotch category played second fiddle to the more fashionable single malt market in the second half of the 20th century. This remains largely true today, however in recent decades the perception of the blend has improved. The company at the forefront of this is Compass Box, founded in 2000 by John Glaser, a former marketing director for the Johnnie Walker brand. Their core range consists of The Spice Tree, The Peat Monster, Story of the Spaniard, Oak Cross and Hedonism blends, and they regularly produce limited editions as well. The company prides itself on its boundary-pushing approach to its creations, and on occasion, boundary-crossing creations, such as the original Spice Tree in 2005 which was banned by the Scotch Whisky Association for its use of suspended staves in casks. Despite investment from Bacardi in 2015, the company continues to push the envelope and rebel against tradition, most notably in its Scotch Whisky Transparency campaign, launched in 2016 following another disagreement with the SWA, this time about their detailed revealing of the recipes of their whiskies.

This was a very special blended Scotch produced to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the Kensington Wine Market in Calgary, Canada.  Bottled at a cask strength of only 45% ABV, this was achieved by the addition of some very old grain. 

The blend was vatted in February 2017 and married in cask until bottling in March of the same year. First fill American oak, sherry butts and new French oak were all used to produce this whisky.

This bottle is being sold from the Pat's Whisk(e)y private collection which, numbering in excess of 9,000 bottles and over 2,000 miniatures, is the single largest collection of whisky ever to be brought to auction. Rivals is a limited release blended malt containing Macallan, Imperial and Teaninich aged in bourbon, sherry and new French oak. It was created for two rival whisky communities in New York and Massachusetts. Blended in August 2016 and bottled in September of the same year.

The Spaniard is a blended malt named after the bar of the same name in New York City, and was a collaborative effort between the proprietor of said eponymous bar, Mikey McFerran, and Compass Box's John Glaser.

The blend contains mostly sherry matured whisky from Spanish oak butts, in keeping with the theme. There are also Highland malts matured in French and American oak in the mix, and some Islay malt to add smokiness. The blend was created in March 2018, and bottled in April the same year. A core range release called Story of the Spaniard and based on this blend was launched later that year to replace the discontinued Asyla.

A 2018 limited edition release from Compass Box, this was intended to replicate (and even contains some of) the inspiration for the original Hedonism grain whisky, a pre-vatted cask containing a marriage of old grain whiskies of unknown provenance.

The Muse is also an affectionate nod to women in the industry and the Compass Box team. The original Hedonism bottling was apparently the first Scotch whisky to feature a woman on the label. One of 3,060 bottles.

Hedonism debuted in 2000. It was unusual at the time (and even now) for its make-up of only single grain whiskies, inspired by John Glaser's love of the lesser-seen cousin of single malt Scotch.

The recipe for batches of the blend vary, and the precise components of each are available upon request from the company. This one contains whisky from four distilleries.

The Peat Monster was born out of a limited bottling titled simply, The Monster, that the company produced for the Park Avenue Liquor Shop in New York. Such was its popularity that The Peat Monster was rolled out as a permanent bottling in 2003.

Bottled in 2008, The Peat Monster Reserve was produced to celebrate the fifth anniversary of the blend, billed as peatier and smokier than the original, they were also bottled at a higher strength, particularly this German market exclusive. It is one of just 155 magnums.

The original blend comprised peated Islay whiskies from Laphroaig and Caol Ila, along with Ledaig and Ardmore single malts, although the modern blend only contains Laphroaig and Caol Ila. The peat is balanced out by a small amount of Compass Box's Highland Malt blend (Teaninich, Clynelish and Dailuaine) and aged in French oak.

The company prides itself on its boundary-pushing approach to its creations, and on occasion, boundary-crossing creations, such as the original Spice Tree in 2005 which was banned by the Scotch Whisky Association for its use of suspended staves in casks. Despite investment from Bacardi in 2015, the company continues to push the envelope and rebel against tradition, most notably in its Scotch Whisky Transparency campaign, launched in 2016 following another disagreement with the SWA, this time about their detailed revealing of the recipes of their whiskies.

The Peat Monster was born out of a limited bottling titled simply, The Monster, that the company produced for the Park Avenue Liquor Shop in New York. Such was its popularity that The Peat Monster was rolled out as a permanent bottling in 2003.

The original blend comprised peated Islay whiskies from Laphroaig and Caol Ila, along with Ledaig and Ardmore single malts, although the modern blend only contains Laphroaig and Caol Ila. The peat is balanced out by a small amount of Compass Box's Highland Malt blend (Teaninich, Clynelish and Dailuaine) and aged in French oak.

Canto cask #47 was specially selected by a team of experts from La Masion du Whisky in Paris.

This special release blend was bottled especially for Bounty Hunter, a wine and spirits shop and bar in Napa Valley, CA. Blended in June 2017 and bottled in October of the same year, it was matured in a combination of American oak hogsheads and sherry butts.

Approximately 5% of the recipe comes from heavily peated Islay malt.

Customers across the world can choose to sell their rum with Whisky Auctioneer. Our Client Service team will support sellers by providing valuations for their bottles and advice on the best way to get their whisky to us for sale into our auctions.

The bottles will be checked-in, authenticated, photographed, and then listed into the next available auction, or an auction of your choice, by our expert team. Whisky Auctioneer hosts monthly auctions, where registered users from across the globe can bid on bottles via our website.  

After the auction closing date, the highest bidder will be notified by email. Payment is required within 72hrs. The buyer can then choose to ship, store, or collect the bottle(s). Buyer fees are applied during the online checkout process.  

The seller will receive payment within 21 working days of the end of the auction, directly to their chosen bank account. Seller fees will be applied to the seller’s invoice after the auction.
