Compass Box Juveniles 20th Anniversary

Despite brands like Ballantine’s, Johnnie Walker and Chivas Regal remaining the best-selling Scotch whisky brands in the world, the blended Scotch category played second fiddle to the more fashionable single malt market in the second half of the 20th century. This remains largely true today, however in recent decades the perception of the blend has improved. The company at the forefront of this is Compass Box, founded in 2000 by John Glaser, a former marketing director for the Johnnie Walker brand. Their core range consists of The Spice Tree, The Peat Monster, Story of the Spaniard, Oak Cross and Hedonism blends, and they regularly produce limited editions as well. Despite investment from Bacardi in 2015, the company continues to push the envelope and rebel against tradition, most notably in its Scotch Whisky Transparency campaign, launched in 2016 following another disagreement with the SWA, this time about their detailed revealing of the recipes of their whiskies.

Juveniles is a famous bar, wine & spirit merchant and bistro located south of the 1st arrondissement in Paris. It was opened by Tim Johnston in March 1987 and this bottling celebrated the 20th anniversary of the venue, which still operates today.

Bottled in 2007 at cask strength, this was drawn from a single cask of specially blended malt whiskies.

This bottle is being sold from the Pat's Whisk(e)y private collection which, numbering in excess of 9,000 bottles and over 2,000 miniatures, is the single largest collection of whisky ever to be brought to auction. The General was a 2013 limited release blend from Compass Box. The whisky was produced by combining two very well aged casks of blended whisky. Both were blended at a very young age, and not being required for bottling at the time, were placed back into cask. One of the barrels was 33 years old, and the other remains a mystery.

The blends contained whiskies matured in both sherry and American oak casks, and the two barrels were blended again by Compass Box to produced this compelling release.

This now very rare limited release was the first bottling of Magic Cask, bottled in 2006 exclusively for the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO) in Canada. It is a vatting of 17 year-old Linkwood that spent the last year of its life in a Madeira barrique (a first for Compass Box at the time), with 14 year-old Clynelish.

One of 480 bottles. The Magic Cask returned with a mass market follow-up release in 2020.

Released in 2007, the Canto Cask series was a batch of sixteen single cask blended malts. Each cask contained the same blend (believed to contain Ardmore, Clynelish and Dailuaine), but was subject to a slightly different finish.

This was bottled in July 2007 from a cask with new French oak heads that had been toasted to level 4 on Compass Box's scale.

Canto cask #123 was specially selected by Fauchon for retail in their Paris store.

Hedonism was the company's first ever blend, debuted in 2000. It was unusual at the time (and even now) for its make-up of only single grain whiskies, inspired by John Glaser's love of the lesser-seen cousin of single malt Scotch.

The blend is comprised of 8 to 15 casks of single grain, from distilleries such as Cameronbridge and the closed Cambus, and most of the whiskies come from first-fill American oak. The recipe for batches of the blend vary, and the precise components of each are available upon request from the company.

Bottled only once or twice per year, this is the inaugural release from October 2000 and contains casks from Carsebridge and Cambus.

One of 618 bottles produced, with only 120 of those having been available in retail. The remainder were sold by Bern's steakhouse with whom Compass Box collaborated with for this release.

This limited edition Compass Box was released at Whisky Live London in 2009, and according to whisky maker John Glaser, was meant to provide people with some hope during economic crises unfolding at the time. It was aged in a combination of American and new French oak casks.

The quirky label design informs the drinker when the bottle is full, and half full. Only 163 of these were bottled by hand across the 27th and 28th of February 2009.

This is an early Compass Box release from a time when \"vatted malt\" was still a legally accepted term. Produced from 2001 until 2003, this was actually their first blended malt, and the recipe contained 15 year old Clynelish from re-charred casks, and a 12 year old single malt from the Port Askaig area of Islay. The blend was retired when the Clynelish needed became unavailable.

This early batch was bottled in December 2001.

Asyla was a rich and full flavoured blend containing nothing but whisky matured in first-fill bourbon casks. One of the company's earliest blends, this was a key part of the core range until it was discontinued in 2018 due to difficulties in sourcing the requisite whiskies.

The recipe for the blend varies from batch to batch, however it always consists of a 50:50 malt to grain ratio with the former usually being distilled in Speyside. Only first-fill American oak casks are used. This is the first ever batch, bottled in March 2001.

Invergordon 1971 Compass Box Hedonism 10th Anniversary

Bottled only once or twice per year, this was a special 2010 limited edition was produced for the blend (and the company's) tenth anniversary and is unusual in that it is not a blend at all. In fact, this is a single grain drawn from one cask distilled at Invergordon in 1971. Aged 38 years, it yielded just 120 bottles.

Invergordon began distilling in 1961. Traditionally Scottish grain producers were located in the Lowland region, where the variety of crops gave more diverse flavour profiles, and the market in England for grain neutral spirits for gin provided them with additional income. Invergordon broke the mould, capitalising on its nearby port, proximity to the malt distilleries of Glenmorangie and Dalmore, and an upturn in the Scotch market in the US. It was not long before it had moved into the blending business, opening the Ben Wyvis and Tamnavulin distilleries a few years later. Invergordon Distillers were acquired by Whyte & Mackay in 1993, and the distillery remains part of that portfolio today.

Milroy's of Soho is a legendary bottle shop located on Greek Street in London. Produced from 2001 until 2003, Eleuthera was actually their first blended malt, and the recipe contained 15 year old Clynelish from re-charred casks, and a 12 year old single malt from the Port Askaig area of Islay. The blend was retired when the Clynelish needed became unavailable.

Bottled in 2005, this special release was drawn from a single marrying cask especially for the 50th anniversary of La Maison du Whisky. The cask was selected alongside one of the Asyla blend by Thierry Benitah.

Challenging people's perceptions of what is and \"isn't a luxury whisky,\" this was designed to be consumed rather than collected and gives a time sensitive-ish best before date of 3027.

Asyla was a rich and full flavoured blend containing nothing but whisky matured in first-fill bourbon casks. One of the company's earliest blends, this was a key part of the core range until it was discontinued in 2018 due to difficulties in sourcing the requisite whiskies.

Bottled in 2005, this special release was drawn from a single marrying cask especially for the 50th anniversary of La Maison du Whisky. The cask was selected alongside one of the Eleuthera blend by Thierry Benitah.

The recipe for the blend varies from batch to batch, however it always consists of a 50:50 malt to grain ratio with the former usually being distilled in Speyside. Only first-fill American oak casks are used.

In 2003, Tatsuya Minagawa and Duncan Elphick of the Highlander Inn worked with Compass Box for several months to find two single casks (one malt, one grain) that perfectly blended together. The result was the first release of The Double Single, which combined a 12 year old single malt from Clynelish with a 15 year old grain whisky from Cambus.  

This second release followed in 2010 as a commemoration of Compass Box's tenth anniversary year. It is one of 876 bottles. A third release followed in 2017.

Hedonism was the company's first ever blend, debuted in 2000. It was unusual at the time (and even now) for its make-up of only single grain whiskies, inspired by John Glaser's love of the lesser-seen cousin of single malt Scotch.

The blend is comprised of 8 to 15 casks of single grain, from distilleries such as Cameronbridge and the closed Cambus, and most of the whiskies come from first-fill American oak. The recipe for batches of the blend vary, and the precise components of each are available upon request from the company.

Bottled only once or twice per year, this is the batch from August 2002.

Released in 2016, this limited edition was one of the flag bearers of the company's transparency drive and took aim at UK and EU restrictions on stating the ages of component whiskies in blends (other than the youngest). So, here we have the Compass Box 3 Year Old Deluxe.

The 3 year old whisky in the blend comprises only 1%, and was distilled near the town of Brora, which for now can only mean Clynelish. 90% of the blend is older whisky from the same distillery, with some Talisker in the mix too.

The 3 year old was matured fully by Compass Box in their warehouses, in first fill American oak casks.

The Nectar was founded in Belgium in 2006 by Mario Groteklaes and Jan Broekmans. In addition to being a well-respected independent bottler, they are also one of Belgium's largest wine and spirit importers. For their 10th anniversary in 2016 there were a number of special releases, and this one from Compass Box was especially unique. 

Roughly half is Ardbeg matured in re-charred American barrels and the other half is made up of the company's French-oak matured Highland Malt Blend (Clynelish, Dailuaine and Teaninich).

Limited to only 660 bottles.

Released in 2005, this is the inaugural Spice Tree batch which used 'fresh new oak staves' placed within the casks to add additional character. The process was restricted by the Scotch Whisky Association as a breach of the traditional methods used to create Scotch whisky, resulting in The Spice Tree being removed from sale and Compass Box has since changed the production method. Today is remains part of their core range.

This rare Compass Box was popular not only because of the controversy but also the quality of whisky. A limited edition, this was one of just 4150 bottles.

Customers across the world can choose to sell their rum with Whisky Auctioneer. Our Client Service team will support sellers by providing valuations for their bottles and advice on the best way to get their whisky to us for sale into our auctions.

The bottles will be checked-in, authenticated, photographed, and then listed into the next available auction, or an auction of your choice, by our expert team. Whisky Auctioneer hosts monthly auctions, where registered users from across the globe can bid on bottles via our website.  

After the auction closing date, the highest bidder will be notified by email. Payment is required within 72hrs. The buyer can then choose to ship, store, or collect the bottle(s). Buyer fees are applied during the online checkout process.  

The seller will receive payment within 21 working days of the end of the auction, directly to their chosen bank account. Seller fees will be applied to the seller’s invoice after the auction.
