Old Midleton is a former Irish whiskey distillery, founded within a converted woollen mill by three brothers, James, Daniel and Jeremiah Murphy in 1825. An ambitious project, the Murphy's commission what is today the largest pot still ever built (no longer in use but still on display in the distillery grounds today). In 1868 it joined North Mall, The Green, Watercourse and Daly's distilleries as part of the Cork Distilleries Group, founded the year prior. Under ownership of Cork Distilleries, Midleton diversified into grain production and began producing a blended Irish whiskey that would famously become known as Paddy.
A cocktail of political, social and economic factors in the 1960s saw Cork Distileries join forces with its last two competitors, John Jameson & Son and John Power & Son. The group was known as Irish Distillers and it consolidated all of its operations at a new Midleton distillery in 1975. What then became known as Old Midleton was shut down and since 1992 has housed the Jameson Experience visitor centre.
The distillery's output was mostly used in blends, including the remain stocks which went into the Midelton Very Rare Irish whiskeys. Some unblended stock has been released over the years however it is still labelled as Midleton.
