Okayama is a very small distillery operation in Japan. Its origins are very old, dating back to the founding of the Miyashita Shuzo sake brewery in 1915. The comapny diversified into craft beer production in 1994 and began experimenting with distilling using these as its wash in 2003.
The distillery was granted a license to produce malt whisky in 2011 and production began the following year. Originally known as Miyashita, in 2017 it was renamed after its flagship Okayama brand.
The Okayama single malt brand was launched in 2017 and was the culmination of the company's transition into whisky production, which began with the opening of what was then the Miyashita distillery in 2012 and subsequent ramping-up of production with the installation of a new German Holstein copper hybrid still in 2015.
The core whisky expression is its Triple Cask release, a 3-year-old single malt aged in brandy, sherry, and Mizunara oak casks. This is supported by occasional single casks and other limited editions. There are also Okayama-branded vodka and gin releases.
