Macduff
Macduff is a malt distillery in Scotland's Highland region, established in 1960 by a consortium of Glasgow whisky brokers that included Brodie Hepburn, Marty Dyke and George Crawford. Today the distillery is part of the Scotch whisky holdings of Bacardi Limited and is managed by its John Dewar & Sons division.
Macduff single malt is currently bottled under The Deveron brands name and is one of the five in John Dewar & Sons' Last Great Malts stable alongside Aberfeldy, Aultmore, Craigellachie and Royal Brackla. Prior to this, Macduff was sold officially as Glen Deveron while the distillery's own name appears only on independent bottlings.
Only seen today under The Deveron or Glen Deveron names, the Macduff name has only been used once on the label for an official bottling from the distillery. Produced in the late 1960s, they were 5-year-old age statements bottled through the Douglas Hamilton & Co subsidiary of then-owner, Block, Grey & Block. The bottles were principally for the use of directors, with some given as gifts to staff and then later also exported to Italy.
When the distillery attempted to register the name Macduff for their single malt brand, trademark objections were raised by both Distillers Company (DCL) and William Grant & Sons. Eventually a deal was cut with DCL that saw them trade five years of new make spirit (although they only upheld this for one year) in exchange for the distillery to use the Glen Deveron name for its brand instead. The first Glen Deveron 5 year old was bottled in 1971.
