Killowen
Killowen is a distillery in Northern Ireland, located within the Mournes of County Down. It was established in 2019 by Brendan Carty and produces single pot still whiskey as well as gin and poitín.
The distillery is highly traditional in its approach, distilling using two Portuguese pot stills which are directly heated over flame. It is also one of the only distilleries on the Irish mainland to use worm tub condensers.
The Killowen brand name is used by the distillery to market all of its spirits. Its pot-distilled gin and poitín were naturally the first and both were released for the first time in July 2019. The poitín is produced using a mash bill of 69.2% malted barley, 23% unmalted barley, 3.8% Maris Otter malt, 2% oats and 2% wheat, and the gin is produced using native Irish botanicals. The current gin range includes flavoured varieties, an aged Old Tom Style and a Navy Strength version.
The distillery's own whiskey came of age in 2022 and it bottled this using the name Barántúil. It has bottled some sourced whiskey using Killowen branding too, launching the Bonded Exclusive Series in 2020 and a core range 5-year-old single malt bottling called Rum & Raisin.
