High Coast is a Swedish malt whisky distillery, founded in 2010 by Mats de Vahl, Per de Vahl, Jan Sahlén, Anders Jonasson, Per Rydberg and Thomas Larsson. It is located in Ådalen along the banks of the fast-flowing and ice-cold Ångerman river, which provides the cooling water for its distillation process. The water for its production is sourced from the Bålsjön spring lake, and it makes both peated and non-peated spirit on pot stills modelled on those at Kilchoman on the Scottish Isle of Islay.
The distillery's original name was Box, and it released its first single malts under the same name in 2014. The operation was rebranded as High Coast in June 2018 however, after the Scottish blending company, Compass Box, raised concerns over potential consumer confusion.
The High Coast brand was introduced along with the new name for the distillery in 2018 and is a reference to the area of Sweden in which it is based, known as the Höga Kasten (meaning "High Coast"). The new name was assumed to coincide with the Box Whisky Festival in June 2018, and the first High Coast labelled whiskies were released later that year.
The current core range is known as The Origins series and was launched in 2019 and included three non-age statements expressions. Two non-peated released called Älv and Berg and a peated release called Hav. A second peated expression called Timmer was then added in 2020.
