Grythyttan was a former Swedish distillery in Lillkyrka and was originally known as Nora Distilleri before changing its name quickly after it opened. It produced its first spirit in 2010 and bottled its first batch of single malt in 2013. Shortly after, the unusual decision was made to decant their entire operation to the Orkney isles where it would be renamed the Longship distillery. This never materialised however, and the distillery never re-opened in Sweden either.
The idea to relocate to Scotland was spurred on by the success of the private cask sales at Grythyttan, so some private and independent bottlings have been made available over the years. In 2016 the remaining warehoused stock at Grythyttan - including the privately-owned casks still in it - were sold to a company called Bergslagens Destilleri Örebro AB. It has been bottling the casks under its own brand names ever since.
The Grythyttan brand was one of the shortest-lived in whisky. It was introduced in 2013 with the launch of its First Edition, a 600-bottle batch of sherry cask-aged single malt. 2013 was also the same year that Grythyttan Whisky AB made the decision to relocate the distillery to Scotland and the failure of the plan resulted in the demise of further production and as a result, the brand.
A second expression known as the Remonteur Edition had been bottled by the distillery and never released. These were, however, included in the 2016 deal that saw Bergslagens Destilleri Örebro AB acquire Grythyttan distillery's remaining warehoused inventory. The company released it to market in 2016.
