Glenfiddich
Glenfiddich is one of the largest malt distilleries in Speyside, mostly owning to the global success of its single malt brand. It was built by William Grant, his wife and nine children and the first spirit flowed from its stills on Christmas Day in 1887. It remains family-owned to this day by William Grant & Sons Ltd.
The distillery is one of Scotch whisky's great pioneers, becoming the first single malt brand to be marketed worldwide as its owner's flagship product in 1963. It was also the first distillery to open its doors to the public in 1969, and introduce solera style ageing to its cask management programme, among others.
William Grant & Sons had been bottling Glenfiddich single malt since the early 20th century, however made history in 1963 when a dispute with Distillers Company over grain supply saw them resolve to switch their primary marketing focus to single malt for the first time. Its proprietary bottling was the Glenfiddich Straight Malt, first introduced in 1961 and also the first to feature the now-iconic triangular bottle shape. Designed in 1957 by Hans Schleger, it is intended to evoke the trinity of water, air and barley that help make Glenfiddich whisky.
The brand was then relaunched in 1968, incorporating the famous twelve-point stag logo and gold foil labels. Referred to as Pure Malts, the range included a non-age statement an 8-, 10- and 12-year-old for various export markets. The non age-statement remained the proprietary release until 2000 when it was replaced by the 12-year-old that still headlines the distillery's core range today. Referred to as Our Original Twelve and as its Flagship Collection, it is joined by age statement called Our Solera Fifteen, Our Small Batch Eighteen and a 14-year-old called Our Bourbon Barrel Reserve. Mostly unchanged in its composition for a number of years, the 15-year-old was first added in 1998 and the 18-year-old in 1992.
