Dartmoor Whisky
Dartmoor Whisky is an English distillery located in the market town of Bovey Tracey, Devon. It was founded in 2017 by Greg Millar and Simon Crow, the former of whom hatched the idea for the project after spending a week working at Bruichladdich on Islay in 2009. Resource-rich, the area provides the distillery with most of its production requirements, including barely, local maltings and ale producers who brew its beer wash.
The distillery uses an old copper still, built in 1966 and imported from the cognac region of France. Its produces both gin and single malt whisky on these under the guidance of former Springbank master distiller, Frank McHardy. Its wood policy includes American oak bourbon barrels, French oak wine barrels and Spanish sherry barrels.
The Dartmoor Whisky brand was launched in 2020 with the release of a handful of single cask bottlings from its earliest distillation runs. Among these were its first ever cask, an ex-sherry barrel filled in February 2017. This was followed by bottlings from casks #3, #5, #7 and #8.
The brand's current core range was then launched at the end of 2020 and its comprises of three expressions, each showcasing one of the types of cask used at the distillery. All non-age statement bottlings, they are simply named as the Sherry Cask Matured, Bordeaux Cask Matured and Bourbon Cask Matured.
