Grand Metropolitan
Grand Metropolitan was an ambitious hotel chain formed in 1962 by the merger of Mount Royal Metropolitan Association and Maxwell Joseph’s Grand Hotels. The company diversified into the alcoholic beverage trade in 1972, with one of its key acquisitions being Watney Mann and its International Distillers & Vintners subsidiary (IDV), which included several key Scotch whisky holdings. The company merged with Guinness PLC in 1997 to become Diageo.
In its time, the core whisky interests of Grand Metropolitan were the J&B blended Scotch and Redbreast Irish whiskey label. It also marketed single malt brands for its Auchroisk, Glen Spey and Knockando distilleries.
