The current D. Johnston & Co (Laphroaig) Ltd was incorporated in 1950, but the original D. Johnston & Co was established by Donald & Alex Johnston in order to manage the Laphroaig distillery that they had built on Islay. Today the company is a dormant subsidiary of the American-based Japanese multinational, Beam Suntory, who also own Laphroaig.
D. Johnston & Co owned the distillery until 1967 when it was acquired by the Schenley Industries-owned Seager Evan & Co. Prior to its takeover, the company had successfully launched the Laphroaig single malt and Islay Mist blended Scotch brands.
