Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ghost and Rare 1st Edition / Brora

A limited release of Johnnie Walker's most premium brand. The Ghost and Rare blends will focus on Scotland's lost and sorely missed distilleries, with this first release built around malt from the legendary Brora. Other \"Ghosts\" rearing their welcome heads from the annals of whisky history is malt from lost Speyside distillery Pittyvaich, and Cambus grain, which closed in 2002 and 1993 respectively.

Given that Brora shut it's doors in 1983, were talking about whisky that was distilled at least 34 years ago!

Speaking of the Ghost and Rare series, master blender Jim Beveridge had the following to say:

“Whiskies from these ghost distilleries are becoming increasingly rare. From our library of irreplaceable casks that we keep exclusively for Johnnie Walker Blue Label, I've chosen a few uniquely full-bodied expressions of these precious malts and grains to let people explore, in a new way, the extraordinary richness found in our pinnacle whisky.”

James E Pepper '1776' 15 Year Old Straight Rye

James E. Pepper is an important figure in the history of US distilling, campaigning in 1890 to get the state of Kentucky to allow him to bottle his own whiskey at the distillery rather than to sell it by the barrel to distributors. He was also chief proponent of the Bottled in Bond Act in 1897, along with Colonel E.H Taylor Jr, and was the first to introduce the strip stamp that became a legal requirement on such products.

The original distillery was purchased by the Schenley company shortly before the repeal of Prohibition, who demolished it and built a new distillery under the James E. Pepper name. It operated until 1958 when it again fell silent before being rebuilt in 2017, filling its first barrel just before Christmas that year.

This was bottled at that new distillery, but the whiskey was distilled in December 1997 at the Seagram's plant in Lawrenceburg, Indiana. Nowadays it is better known as MGP, and is famous for its high quality rye.

J.W. Dant 7 Year Old Bourbon 1960s

An old bottle of J.W. Dant sour mash bourbon.

Joseph Washington Dant was a Kentucky distiller during the 1830's He was famous for making whisky using a log still. This was an old time method from when the settlers did not have the money for a copper still. A section of tree trunk would be hollowed out with a copper pipe running through it. The hollowed section would be filled with the fermented mash and steam fed through the pipe to start distillations.

These days the Dant brand is produced at Heaven Hill. This 1960s bottling however was produced by Schenley, who acquired the Dant Gesthemane distillery in 1952, where this was distilled. Gesthemane closed in the early 1960s, so this was bottled by Schenley at their plant in Aladdin, PA.
