Macduff 1967 Jack Wiebers 38 Year Old / Old Train Line

This was bottled by Lars-Goran Wiebers, aka \"Jack.\" He is the proprietor of the renowned Jack Wiebers Whisky World retailer in Germany, established in 1996. Since then has released a number of respected independent bottlings under labels such as the Old Train Line, Gentle Noses, The Cross Hill and Auld Distillers Alliance.

A cask strength release, this Macduff single malt was bottled as part of the Old Train Line series in 2005.

Production began at Macduff distillery in 1963, and it was eventually purchased by William Lawson, the Scotch whisky arm of Italian giants, Martini & Rossi. In addition to provision for the William Lawson blend, the company also set about bottling its single malt, selecting the name \"Glen Deveron,\" and youthful 5 and 8 year old age statements so make it more marketable in Italy, where its Glen Grant equivalents were best-sellers. Glen Deveron disappeared after Bacardi took over the distillery ownership in 1993, but eventually returned as simply The Deveron. Macduff-labelled single malts were widely bottled by independent companies in the meantime, and continue to be today.

Benrinnes 1997 High Spirits 19 Year Old / Life is a Circus

Until 2007, Benrinnes had a unique triple distillation process that resulted in a single malt highly prized by blenders for its distinct \"meaty\" quality. So much so in fact, that none was spared for an official distillery bottling until United Distillers introduced the 15 year old Flora & Fauna release. Thankfully, the distillery has always featured in the catalogues of independent bottlers, giving ample opportunity to experience this sought after single malt.

Bunnahabhain 1976 Moon Import 30th Anniversary / The Bird

Moon Import was founded by Pepi Mongiardino in 1980 and he bottled his first whisky in 1982. Always beautifully labelled, Pepi is acclaimed for designing the packaging for Moon Import bottles himself, often using images found in old books. These iconic designs, coupled with the quality of the liquid saw Moon Import steadily grow in popularity. The company is still going strong, and their early releases are some of the brightest gems in any whisky collection.

This Bunnahabhain was bottled by Moon Import to celebrate its 30th anniversary. An homage to the classic The Birds series, this is a 1976 vintage, bottled in 2010 from single hogshead #2141. One of 270.

Millburn 1981 Jack Wiebers 23 Year Old / Old Train Line

A 1981 vintage, single cask Millburn, this was bottled for the Old Train Line series from a sherry cask in 2004.

Millburn was the oldest of the three distilleries based in Inverness, the others being Glen Mhor and Glen Albyn, all of which closed within two years of each other. Millburn was the last, in 1985. The distillery was brought to prominence under the ownership of the Haig family at the end of the 19th century, but was always a small operation. It passed via the hands of Booth's (a London-based gin distillery), to DCL (now Diageo) in 1937. Its small stature made it an easy pick for closure during the era of oversupply in the 1980s, and sadly it has never returned. Never officially bottled in its time, the only distillery bottlings are within the Rare Malts Selection, and elusive independent releases like this are incredibly sought after.

Macallan 1989 The Cross Hill

It may be hard to imagine today, but for much of the 20th century, Macallan was primarily a constituent malt in blends. It was not until the 1980s downturn in the market that the distillery decided to focus on its single malt brand. Fortuitously, this coincided with the crest of a wave of enthusiasm for the high quality releases that the distillery had licensed to Campbell, Hope & King and Gordon & MacPhail in the 1960s and 1970s. These remain some of the most collectible on the market. While global single malt sales volume is still lead by Speyside neighbours, Glenfiddich and Glenlivet, Macallan is easily the most sought after. So much so in fact, that they had to open a brand new distillery in 2018, a subterranean architectural masterpiece within the Easter Elchies estate, boasting 36 copper pot stills.

A Mortlach, this was bottled at cask strength for Monnier Trading in Switzerland.

Mortlach was founded in 1823 and was the first of Dufftown's \"Seven Stills\" to be licensed. It rose to pre-eminence under George Cowie & Son, who's unique distillation regime produced a famously \"meaty\" whisky, which was highly prized by blenders. It was for this reason that it was acquired by John Walker & Sons, and so important to them was it that little stock was left available for bottling as a single malt. The Flora & Fauna release was the first official distillery bottling, but it was not until 2014 that Mortlach was bottled under its own fully fledged single malt brand. Thankfully, there have been many spectacular releases from independent labels like this over the years.

Bunnahabhain 1991 Wilson and Morgan 25 Year Old Decanter

Wilson & Morgan was founded in Italy in 1992 by Fabio Rossi, the son of prolific importer Mario Rossi Jr, who began distributing Scotch whisky back in the 1960s. His son’s company was one of a new generation of Italian bottlers established in the 1990s, which aimed to replicate the successes of predecessors like Samaroli and Moon Import.

This elegant decanter bottling of Bunnahabhain was finished in Pedro Ximenez sherry wood and bottled in 2017.

A 1978 vintage of this fairly unusual Speysider, bottled in 1998 as part of the Horae Solaris series. One of only 720 bottles produced.

Miltonduff is located in Speyside and is perhaps best known as one of the key malts in the Ballantine's blends. It was purchased by Hiram Walker in the 1930s, who installed the Lomond stills that briefly produced the now sought after Mosstowie single malts in 1964, but these were removed again in 1981. The distillery passed through the hands Allied Distillers before arriving with current owners, Pernod-Ricard, and despite its continued requirements for Ballantine's blends, official bottlings of its single malt have been deemed worthy of bottling by each of its proprietors, a sentiment shared by many independent companies too.

Coilltean was originally a label devised by Samaroli to give more variety to his portfolio after over-purchasing casks of Glen Garioch. By the early 2000s he was using many distilleries to bottle Coilltean, and now disclosing their names. These are some of the first releases to bear the contentious \"refined inside the bottle since...\" text, that the Scotch Whisky Association abhorred, but Silvano fully believed in.

Distilled in 1978, this was bottled in 2008 after maturing in sherry butt #7224.

Monymusk 1979 Moon Import

Sharing the aesthetic of the company's two The Birds series, this is a Monymusk pot still Jamaican rum from Clarendon distillery, bottled in 1989.

Monymusk is the flagship brand of Clarendon rum marketed by majority owners, National Rums of Jamaica. The holding company was established in 1985 and is currently a joint venture between the Jamaican government, Demerara Distillers in Guyana, and Maison Ferrand in France. The Monymusk brand is named after the sugar factory and plantation in which the Clarendon distillery is located, and the rum is aged and blended at NRJ’s silent Innswood distillery, which ceased production in 1992. Clarendon distillery is one of the Caribbean’s newer rum factories, built back in 1949. Back then, it was a small operation, running a single pot still produced by legendary Louisville, Kentucky coppersmiths, Vendome. Today it is joined by a second, larger pot still of Indian manufacture, a modern five-column still, both installed in 2009.

Banff 1975 The Cross Hill

A distillery almost as synonymous with fire as it is with whisky, Banff experienced four separate blazes during its chequered history, including a bombing by the Luftwaffe in 1941. The distillery operated until 1983 when it was closed by DCL (now Diageo) after a downturn in the market lead to an oversupply. Unsurprisingly, it caught fire in the process of being dismantled and has never re-opened. Its malt was predominantly reserved for blending in its time, but it has contributed to some particularly sought after independent releases over the years.

Bruichladdich 2001 Singles of Silvano Samaroli Ocean Wind

Samaroli is perhaps Italy's most revered independent bottler of Scotch whisky. With an impeccable taste in single cask whiskies, and an eye for aesthetics (if not English spelling at times!), he is regarded by many as a visionary. Many of his bottles now occupy deserved sports on the pantheon of whisky greats. Having handed the reigns of the Samaroli company to Antonio Bleve in 2008, Silvano began bottling casks from his personal collections under this Singles of Silvano Samaroli brand. Releases like this one were initially supervised by the man himself, but since his death in 2017, the tradition has been lovingly continued by Masam, the bottling company run by his wife, Maryse Accorsi Samaroli.

Bowmore 1989 High Spirits 15 Year Old Sherry Wood / Memories

Islay’s oldest working distillery, Bowmore was established in 1779 and is now regarded as one of the most popular malts not only on Islay, but in the whole of Scotland. The distillery was acquired by Stanley P. Morrison in 1963, ushering in an era of iconic single malts, including the legendary Black Bowmore, credited by many as the genesis of whisky collecting, bottled in 1993. The distillery was bought under the control Suntory the year after (they had been stakeholders since 1989), and it remains one of the most collectible brands in Scotch whisky today. Bowmore is one of the few remaining Scottish distilleries to use its own floor maltings, providing them with 40% of their requirements. The unique microclimate in their iconic No.1 vaults shares very little with the angels, meaning casks are readily available for independent labels like this, many of which are spectacular.

Bunnahabhain 1980 Velier 37 Year Old Drop by Drop / 70th Anniversary

Velier was founded by Casimir Chaix in Genoa in 1947 as a wine and spirits importer and distributor. By the 1980s they were still a small family-company with less than ten staff. This all changed in 1986 when it was purchased by Luca Gargano, a former brand ambassador for Saint James who was at the time still in his twenties. Under his direction, they selected their first single cask whiskies in 1992, and their first rum in 1996. In the decades that followed, Velier have gone on to become one of the most collectible brands in the industry.

This special single cask Bunnahabhain was distilled in 1980 and bottled in 2017 for Velier's 70th anniversary. It was drawn from ex-bourbon hogshead #2905 by Signatory Vintage and is one of 65 releases fromthe celebratory Drop by Drop range.

Balmenach is a rarely seen single malt distillery in Speyside. It was built in the early 19th century and for the majority of the 20th it was owned by DCL (now Diageo). Its distinctive style made it highly prized by blenders, and little of it was spared for official distillery bottlings, or independents for that matter. The distillery was closed in 1993 during the Scotch market downturn, but was revived in 1997 by Inver House who purchased it and resumed production. Bowmore 1983 Moon Import / De Viris Illustribus

Moon Import was founded by Pepi Mongiardino in 1980 and he bottled his first whisky in 1982. Always beautifully labelled, Pepi is acclaimed for designing the packaging for Moon Import bottles himself, often using images found in old books. These iconic designs, coupled with the quality of the liquid saw Moon Import steadily grow in popularity. The company is still going strong, and their early releases are some of the brightest gems in any whisky collection.

This is a 1983 vintage Bowmore from their De Viribus Illustribus series. Bottled for Moon Import in 1995 by Brae Dean. De Viris Illustribus means \"about famous men\" in Latin.

Islay’s oldest working distillery, Bowmore was established in 1779 and is now regarded as one of the most popular malts not only on Islay, but in the whole of Scotland. The distillery was acquired by Stanley P. This was bottled by Lars-Goran Wiebers, aka \"Jack.\" He is the proprietor of the renowned Jack Wiebers Whisky World retailer in Germany, established in 1996. Silver Seal was founded by Ernesto Mainardi in 2000. This was Mainardi's second bottling company after the esteemed Sestane in 1979. Both companies were sold to Massimo Righi, proprietor of Whisky Antique, in 2010.

Mosstowie 1979 The Ultimate 34 Year Old Rare Reserve

Mosstowie is a long-discontinued single malt that was produced at the Miltonduff distillery in Speyside using Lomond stills. The stills were installed in the 1960s by owners Hiram Walker, who had done likewise at their Scapa, Inverleven and Glenburgie distilleries. The experiment was short-lived, with Miltonduff's Lomond stills ripped out and replaced by traditional pot stills in 1981. Primarily used as a constituent in Ballantine's blends, Mosstowie is rarely seen as a single malt, and sought after when it is.

This 1979 vintage was bottled from a single bourbon barrel in 2013.

Miltonduff 1995 High Spirits 22 Year Old / Life is a Circus

Miltonduff is located in Speyside and is perhaps best known as one of the key malts in the Ballantine's blends. It was purchased by Hiram Walker in the 1930s, who installed the Lomond stills that briefly produced the now sought after Mosstowie single malts in 1964, but these were removed again in 1981. The distillery passed through the hands Allied Distillers before arriving with current owners, Pernod-Ricard, and despite its continued requirements for Ballantine's blends, official bottlings of its single malt have been deemed worthy of bottling by each of its proprietors, a sentiment shared by many independent companies too.

It rose to pre-eminence under George Cowie & Son, who's unique distillation regime produced a famously \"meaty\" whisky, which was highly prized by blenders. It was for this reason that it was acquired by John Walker & Sons, and so important to them was it that little stock was left available for bottling as a single malt. The Flora & Fauna release was the first official distillery bottling, but it was not until 2014 that Mortlach was bottled under its own fully fledged single malt brand. Thankfully, there have been many spectacular releases from independent labels like this over the years.

Benrinnes 1997 LMDW Chapter III

Until 2007, Benrinnes had a unique triple distillation process that resulted in a single malt highly prized by blenders for its distinct \"meaty\" quality. So much so in fact, that none was spared for an official distillery bottling until United Distillers introduced the 15 year old Flora & Fauna release. Thankfully, the distillery has always featured in the catalogues of independent bottlers, giving ample opportunity to experience this sought after single malt.

This whisky was distilled on 27th October 1997 and bottled from sherry hogshead #9734 in 2018 for legendary French spirit merchants, La Maison du Whisky.

La Maison du Whisky, aka LMDW, was founded in 1956 by Georges Benitah and is now one of the largest whisky and rum importers and distributors in France, and known the world over. They opened their first shop in Paris at the legendary 20 Rue d'Anjou in 1968, importing their first Scotch malt whiskies in the 1970s. They are known for their expertise in not only Scotch, but Japanese whisky and rum too, and their collaborative bottlings, as well as their own independent labels like this one, are highly prized.

Millburn was the oldest of the three distilleries based in Inverness, the others being Glen Mhor and Glen Albyn, all of which closed within two years of each other. Millburn was the last, in 1985. The distillery was brought to prominence under the ownership of the Haig family at the end of the 19th century, but was always a small operation. It passed via the hands of Booth's (a London-based gin distillery), to DCL (now Diageo) in 1937. Its small stature made it an easy pick for closure during the era of oversupply in the 1980s, and sadly it has never returned. Never officially bottled in its time, the only distillery bottlings are within the Rare Malts Selection, and elusive independent releases like this are incredibly sought after.

Bowmore 1989 Moon Import / Menses

Moon Import was founded by Pepi Mongiardino in 1980 and he bottled his first whisky in 1982. Always beautifully labelled, Pepi is acclaimed for designing the packaging for Moon Import bottles himself, often using images found in old books. These iconic designs, coupled with the quality of the liquid saw Moon Import steadily grow in popularity. The company is still going strong, and their early releases are some of the brightest gems in any whisky collection.

This 1989 vintage Bowmore was bottled for Moon Import as part of the Menses range.  Menses mean \"month\" in Latin, however the series, which includes a rum, only comprises 6 releases. Bottled in 2002 from French wine cask #12494.

This was bottled by Lars-Goran Wiebers, aka \"Jack.\" He is the proprietor of the renowned Jack Wiebers Whisky World retailer in Germany, established in 1996. Since then has released a number of respected independent bottlings under labels such as the Old Train Line, Gentle Noses, The Cross Hill and Auld Distillers Alliance.

The Wanted series is a range of Bowmore single casks which all feature modern lampoons on the wanted posters of the old American west, often with whisky industry in-jokes and references.
