Despite brands like Ballantine’s, Johnnie Walker and Chivas Regal remaining the best-selling Scotch whisky brands in the world, the blended Scotch category played second fiddle to the more fashionable single malt market in the second half of the 20th century. This remains largely true today, however in recent decades the perception of the blend has improved. The company at the forefront of this is Compass Box, founded in 2000 by John Glaser, a former marketing director for the Johnnie Walker brand. Their core range consists of The Spice Tree, The Peat Monster, Story of the Spaniard, Oak Cross and Hedonism blends, and they regularly produce limited editions as well. The company prides itself on its boundary-pushing approach to its creations, and on occasion, boundary-crossing creations, such as the original Spice Tree in 2005 which was banned by the Scotch Whisky Association for its use of suspended staves in casks. Despite investment from Bacardi in 2015, the company continues to push the envelope and rebel against tradition, most notably in its Scotch Whisky Transparency campaign, launched in 2016 following another disagreement with the SWA, this time about their detailed revealing of the recipes of their whiskies.

Hedonism was the company's first ever blend, debuted in 2000. It was unusual at the time (and even now) for its make-up of only single grain whiskies, inspired by John Glaser's love of the lesser-seen cousin of single malt Scotch.

The blend is comprised of 8 to 15 casks of single grain, from distilleries such as Cameronbridge and the closed Cambus, and most of the whiskies come from first-fill American oak. The recipe for batches of the blend vary, and the precise components of each are available upon request from the company.

Bottled only once or twice per year, this one is from 2011.

A blend of Clynelish , Allt-A-Bhainne and Caol Ila single malts, this is The Lost Blend and is a 2014 homage to the the retired Compass Box expression, Eleuthera, which they discontinued after just 3 years (2001-2003) following their inability to obtain the required age of Clynelish.

The release was bottled with one of three randomly assigned labels. This is the third design.

This was bottled in August 2016 to celebrate the 10th anniversary of the once-controversial blend. Using the regular The Spice Tree blend as a starting point, the Extravaganza increased the amount of sherry matured whiskies to the blend, as well as the ages.

  • 17.2% Benrinnes, first fill sherry butt
  • 2.6% Allt-A-Bhaine, first fill American standard barrel
  • 27.7% Highland malt blend, hybrid cask - light/medium toast
  • 4.3% Highland malt blend, refill hybrid cask 
  • 15.6% Highland malt blend, hybrid cask - heavy toast (all three are 60% Clynelish, 20% Dailuaine and 20% Teaninich)

The Peat Monster was born out of a limited bottling titled simply, The Monster, that the company produced for the Park Avenue Liquor Shop in New York. Such was its popularity that The Peat Monster was rolled out as a permanent bottling in 2003.

The original blend comprised peated Islay whiskies from Laphroaig and Caol Ila, along with Ledaig and Ardmore single malts, although the modern blend only contains Laphroaig and Caol Ila. The peat is balanced out by a small amount of Compass Box's Highland Malt blend (Teaninich, Clynelish and Dailuaine) and aged in French oak.

A collaboration between Compass Box and Scottish craft-brewers BrewDog, this is a blended Scotch matured in a high proportion of first-fill American oak barrels and a malt content finished in French oak hybrid casks.

Released in 2019, Transistor is part of the Boilermaker series and is intended to be the perfect accompaniment to Punk IPA, Brewdog's flagship beer.

The Story of the Spaniard is a blended malt and a follow-up to the 2018 US exclusive The Spaniard release, so-called after the bar of the same name in New York City. The blend is comprised of 48% single malts that had been matured in ex-Spanish wine casks.

A batch release, this joined the company's \"The Malt Collection\" core range in place of the discontinued Asyla in 2018.

This was the second Compass Box homage to Delilah's, the legendary punk rock whisky bar in Chicago. The first was bottled on the advent of its 20th anniversary in 2013, and this came five years later for its 25th.

The vatting was produced using a small parcel of the original 20th anniversary blend, aged a further 5 years in cask with Spanish sherry oak and American oak matured whiskies added to the mix. One of 8,520 bottles.

Juveniles is a famous bar, wine & spirit merchant and bistro located south of the 1st arrondissement in Paris. It was opened by Tim Johnston in March 1987 and still operates today.

Bottled between 2003 and 2005, the blend was originally intended only for sale at Juveniles, however was rolled out further at the request first of Compass Box's French distributor, followed by others across Europe.

This 2018 limited edition was the fourth blend produced by Compass Box for Juveniles, following releases in 2007 and 2014.

Oak Cross was created to provide an insight into the best characteristics of American oak and French oak. A blend of Highland and Speyside single malts, it contains Clynelish, Dailuaine and Teaninch. 

Compass Box worked with a small cooperage in France to produce new French oak heads to place on 40% of the whisky used in Oak Cross. Once again, Compass Box's innovative production methods received a less than warm reception from the Scotch Whisky Association!

Part of the company's core range \"Malt Whisky Collection,\" Oak Cross is however due tobe doscontinued in all markets by the end of 2021.

The recipe for the blend varies from batch to batch, however it always consists of a 50:50 malt to grain ratio with the former usually being distilled in Speyside. Only first-fill American oak casks are used.

Oak Cross was created to provide an insight into the best characteristics of American oak and French oak. A blend of Highland and Speyside single malts, it contains Clynelish, Dailuaine and Teaninch. 

Compass Box worked with a small cooperage in France to produce new French oak heads to place on 40% of the whisky used in Oak Cross. Once again, Compass Box's innovative production methods received a less than warm reception from the Scotch Whisky Association!

Part of the company's core range \"Malt Whisky Collection,\" Oak Cross is however due tobe doscontinued in all markets by the end of 2021.

The bottles will be checked-in, authenticated, photographed, and then listed into the next available auction, or an auction of your choice, by our expert team. Whisky Auctioneer hosts monthly auctions, where registered users from across the globe can bid on bottles via our website.  

After the auction closing date, the highest bidder will be notified by email. Payment is required within 72hrs. The buyer can then choose to ship, store, or collect the bottle(s). Buyer fees are applied during the online checkout process.  

The seller will receive payment within 21 working days of the end of the auction, directly to their chosen bank account. Seller fees will be applied to the seller’s invoice after the auction.
