Port Ellen 1981 Single Cask #1301 / Feis Ile 2008

Port Ellen is the lost jewel in the Islay crown, closed down by DCL (now Diageo) in 1983 due to an oversupply of peated whisky for blending and a perceived lack of interest in it as a single malt. It has developed a legendary status in the years since. A very rare 12 year old bottled for attendees of the visit of Queen Elizabeth II in 1980 is believed to have been the only distillery bottling produced in its years of operation. Diageo then bottled the first publicly available distillery bottlings as part of the Rare Malts Selection, followed by the annual special releases.

Arguably one of the rarest Port Ellen around, this official bottling was released for the Feis Ile in 2008 and sold out instantly. A 1981 vintage was the only official single cask offering from Port Ellen for a long time. It was distilled on 15th April 1981 and bottled in 2008. The single ex-refill American oak cask #1301 yielded only 220 bottles.

Port Ellen 1979 40 Year Old Untold Stories: 9 Rogue Casks / Charity Lot

The second release from a series of bottles from the legendary Islay distillery, titled Untold Stories.

Port Ellen is the lost jewel in the Islay crown, closed down by DCL (now Diageo) in 1983 due to an oversupply of peated whisky for blending and a perceived lack of interest in it as a single malt. It has developed a legendary status in the years since. A very rare 12 year old bottled for attendees of the visit of Queen Elizabeth II in 1980 is believed to have been the only distillery bottling produced in its years of operation. Diageo then bottled the first publicly available distillery bottlings as part of the Rare Malts Selection, followed by a series of annual special releases.

This whisky was distilled in 1979 and has been aged for 40 years. It is made up of four American oak hogsheads and five European oak butts that have been bottled at cask strength.

Originally the plan was to debut this release at Fèis Ìle. Sadly, like most public events in 2020, Fèis Ìle was cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. This meant that 9 Rogue Casks premiered via a virtual online whisky tasting led by future Port Ellen master distiller Georgie Crawford.

One of 1,380 bottles.

This lot has been kindly donated to the Feis Ile Committee and all proceeds raised from the sale of these bottles will benefit the Islay community as the funds will kick-start The Islay Wave Project - an ongoing project that will begin after this year's virtual festival. Focusing on ways to support the island's culture, artists and youth, The Islay Wave Project concentrates on everything that is celebrated throughout Fèis Ìle.

Ardbeg 1976 Single Sherry Cask #2390 / Feis Ile 2002

You would not think it to see it now, but Ardbeg had a difficult time of it for much of the 20th century. The distillery was bought in a joint venture between Hiram Walker and DCL in 1959, both intending to supply their blends. The subsequent years were very successful, but DCL backed out in 1979 (closing many of their other distilleries a few years later), and Hiram Walker then struggled in the 1980s era oversupply when interest is blended Scotch was waning. They closed it down for the majority of the decade. It re-opened briefly in the 1990s before being revived for good by Glenmorangie plc in 1997.

This single sherry butt #2390 was filled on 24th November 1976 and matured for 25 years prior to bottling on 27th April 2002 for the Feis Ile festival on Islay.  Only available at Ardbeg distillery, 494 bottles of this were filled.

This bottling is one of the highest-scoring Ardbeg on WhiskyFun, scoring 96 points.

A single cask Ardbeg, this was distilled on 26th December 1975 and bottled at 29 years old on 14th April 2005. Drawn from single ex-Oloroso sherry cask #4704, this was made available to distillery visitors during the Feis Ile that year.

They closed it down for the majority of the decade. It re-opened briefly in the 1990s before being revived for good by Glenmorangie plc in 1997. The lack of demand in the period prior to this, thankfully, saw a lot of casks sold to independent bottlers, many of which have gone on to become legendary releases.

This 27 year old single cask was distilled on 24th November and then bottled in May 2004.

This whisky was distilled on Boxing Day in 1975 and matured in a Fino sherry cask before being bottled on 3rd May 2006.

Bowmore 25 Year Old Feis Ile 25th Anniversary / Feis Ile 2010

Islay’s oldest working distillery, Bowmore was established in 1779 and is now regarded as one of the most popular malts not only on Islay, but in the whole of Scotland. The distillery was acquired by Stanley P. Morrison in 1963, ushering in an era of iconic single malts, including the legendary Black Bowmore, credited by many as the genesis of whisky collecting, bottled in 1993. The distillery was bought under the control Suntory the year after (they had been stakeholders since 1989), and it remains one of the most collectible brands in Scotch whisky today. Bowmore is one of the few remaining Scottish distilleries to use its own floor maltings, providing them with 40% of their requirements.

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the annual Feis Ile fetivities on Islay, Bowmore released a mere 100 of this limited edition signed 25 year old. This is number 68 of 100 and it is signed by Distillery Manager, Eddie MacAffer.

Laphroaig 1987 Single Cask 17 Year Old #4299 / Feis Ile 2004 

Laphroaig is the largest of the three heavyweight Islay distilleries in Kildalton, out-stripping the production capacity of neighbours, Ardbeg and Lagavulin, by over 1 million litres per annum. Despite its traditional appearance, Laphroaig was always a forward-thinking distillery. It was bottled as a single malt as early as the 1920s, an unfashionable option at the time, especially for a peated whisky. They were also shrewd in capitalising on post-Prohibition America to add trademark sweetness to their spirit through the use of imported ex-bourbon casks, and hired Scotland’s first ever female distillery manager, Bessie Williamson, in 1954. Laphroaig is one of only a handful of distilleries in Scotland to still use in-house maltings, providing them with 20% of their annual requirements, and contributing to the distillery’s unique flavour profile. 

These earlier Feis Ile releases are a real rarity and don't often find their way to auction. Released at Laphroaig distillery during the Feis Ile in 2004, this single cask was selected by Master Blender Robert Hicks as representing the best example of 1987 distillate.

Bunnahabhain 1967 Single Cask 35 Year Old #3316 / Feis Ile 2002

An austere piece of Victorian architecture on the north-east coast of Islay, Bunnahabhain is a relative outsider on the island, traditionally known for producing an un-peated single malt. The majority of this was used for blending, as was its initial intended purpose. The distillery was shut for 2 years in 1982 following the market downturn of the period, and despite being revived at low production, it was eventually officially bottled as a single malt later that decade, with the self-deprecating tag-line, \"the un-pronounceable malt.\"

Distilled in March 1967, this was matured in single cask #3316 for 35 years until it was bottled in June 2002 for the Feis Ile that year. One of only 234 bottles.

Ardbeg 2003 Single Chenin Blanc Cask #2455 / Feis Ile 2019

You would not think it to see it now, but Ardbeg had a difficult time of it for much of the 20th century. The distillery was bought in a joint venture between Hiram Walker and DCL in 1959, both intending to supply their blends. The subsequent years were very successful, but DCL backed out in 1979 (closing many of their other distilleries a few years later), and Hiram Walker then struggled in the 1980s era oversupply when interest is blended Scotch was waning. They closed it down for the majority of the decade. It re-opened briefly in the 1990s before being revived for good by Glenmorangie plc in 1997.

The expected but always welcome Ardbeg Day surprise single cask, this was available exclusively for revellers at their Feis Ile open day and is one of two released for 2019.

Bowmore 1983 Single Sherry Cask / Feis Ile 2011

Islay’s oldest working distillery, Bowmore was established in 1779 and is now regarded as one of the most popular malts not only on Islay, but in the whole of Scotland. The distillery was acquired by Stanley P. Morrison in 1963, ushering in an era of iconic single malts, including the legendary Black Bowmore, credited by many as the genesis of whisky collecting, bottled in 1993. The distillery was bought under the control Suntory the year after (they had been stakeholders since 1989), and it remains one of the most collectible brands in Scotch whisky today. Bowmore is one of the few remaining Scottish distilleries to use its own floor maltings, providing them with 40% of their requirements.

Laphroaig 1992 Single Cask 13 Year Old #228 / Feis Ile 2005

Laphroaig is the largest of the three heavyweight Islay distilleries in Kildalton, out-stripping the production capacity of neighbours, Ardbeg and Lagavulin, by over 1 million litres per annum. Despite its traditional appearance, Laphroaig was always a forward-thinking distillery. It was bottled as a single malt as early as the 1920s, an unfashionable option at the time, especially for a peated whisky. They were also shrewd in capitalising on post-Prohibition America to add trademark sweetness to their spirit through the use of imported ex-bourbon casks, and hired Scotland’s first ever female distillery manager, Bessie Williamson, in 1954. Laphroaig is one of only a handful of distilleries in Scotland to still use in-house maltings, providing them with 20% of their annual requirements, and contributing to the distillery’s unique flavour profile.

These earlier Feis Ile releases are a real rarity and don't often find their way to auction. Released at Laphroaig distillery during the Feis Ile in 2005, cask #228 was filled on 16th January 1992 and yielded only 170 bottles.

The subsequent years were very successful, but DCL backed out in 1979 (closing many of their other distilleries a few years later), and Hiram Walker then struggled in the 1980s era oversupply when interest is blended Scotch was waning. They closed it down for the majority of the decade. It re-opened briefly in the 1990s before being revived for good by Glenmorangie plc in 1997.

Drawn from two Spanish Pedro Ximenez sherry butts, this rare Ardbeg was distilled in 1998 and released to mark Feis Ile 2011.

Bunnahabhain 1966 Single Cask 35 Year Old #4379 / Feis Ile 2002

An austere piece of Victorian architecture on the north-east coast of Islay, Bunnahabhain is a relative outsider on the island, traditionally known for producing an un-peated single malt. The majority of this was used for blending, as was its initial intended purpose. The distillery was shut for 2 years in 1982 following the market downturn of the period, and despite being revived at low production, it was eventually officially bottled as a single malt later that decade, with the self-deprecating tag-line, \"the un-pronounceable malt.\"

A limted edition release, this was distilled in May 1966 and matured in single cask #4379 for 35 years unitl bottled in March 2002. 

One of only 401 bottles produced for the Feis Ile on Islay.

Lagavulin 25 Year Old Bicentenary Edition / Charity Lot

Lagavulin distillery is one of the quintessential Islay producers, built in the early 19th century before eventually finding itself in the hands of White Horse blenders and their infamous proprietor, Sir Peter Mackie. It has truly captured the imagination of the whisky world in modern times, with the 16 year old becoming an instant (if unexpected) favourite when introduced as one of United Distillers' Classic Malts in 1988. The company had not expected the smoky flavours to be as popular as lighter offerings such as Dalwhinnie and Glenkinchie. Lagavulin was also home to the legendary (and near mythical) Malt Mill distillery in the first half of the 20th century.

Released in 2016 as part of Diageo's Special Releases, this sherry cask matured, cask strength 25 year old Lagavulin was one of a number of limited editions produced in celebration of the distillery's 200th anniversary.

This lot has been kindly donated to the Feis Ile Committee and all proceeds raised from the sale of these bottles will benefit the Islay community as the funds will kick-start The Islay Wave Project - an ongoing project that will begin after this year's virtual festival. Focusing on ways to support the island's culture, artists and youth, The Islay Wave Project concentrates on everything that is celebrated throughout Fèis Ìle.

Ardbeg 1998 Single New Toasted Cask #1190 / Feis Ile 2009

You would not think it to see it now, but Ardbeg had a difficult time of it for much of the 20th century. The distillery was bought in a joint venture between Hiram Walker and DCL in 1959, both intending to supply their blends. The subsequent years were very successful, but DCL backed out in 1979 (closing many of their other distilleries a few years later), and Hiram Walker then struggled in the 1980s era oversupply when interest is blended Scotch was waning. They closed it down for the majority of the decade. It re-opened briefly in the 1990s before being revived for good by Glenmorangie plc in 1997.

This whisky was filled into new toasted hogshead #1190 on 11th May 1998 and eventually bottled on 10th December 2008.

Bowmore 1985 Vintage / Feis Ile 2012

Islay’s oldest working distillery, Bowmore was established in 1779 and is now regarded as one of the most popular malts not only on Islay, but in the whole of Scotland. The distillery was acquired by Stanley P. Morrison in 1963, ushering in an era of iconic single malts, including the legendary Black Bowmore, credited by many as the genesis of whisky collecting, bottled in 1993. The distillery was bought under the control Suntory the year after (they had been stakeholders since 1989), and it remains one of the most collectible brands in Scotch whisky today. Bowmore is one of the few remaining Scottish distilleries to use its own floor maltings, providing them with 40% of their requirements.

Released at Feis Ile 2012, this 1985 vintage Bowmore was restricted to only 200 bottles and of that, 30 were given to staff. The whisky was matured in both bourbon and sherry casks and was bottled at cask strength.

Ardbeg Mor 10 Year Old Cask Strength 4.5 Litre 1st Edition

The \"Guaranteed 10 year old\" was the standard Ardbeg single malt release during the 1970s and 1980s, however the last of these were sold by Allied Distillers in the early 1990s. When Glenmorangie plc first took over at the distillery, the gap in stock due to its numerous closures meant that the first age-statement distillery bottling they could release was a generous 17 year old. This now classic 10 year old expression made its triumphant return in 2000 however.

This particular bottling was a combination of two casks, both filled in 1989. One was a first-fill French oak wine barrique and the other a first-fill American bourbon barrel. The 24 year old whisky was limited to a mere 300 bottles which sold out by 2pm on the Bowmore open day at Feis Ile in 2014.

Caol Ila 1990 Single Cask 28 Year Old #9373 / Feis Ile 2019

Caol Ila distillery was built in 1846 by Hector Henderson, who was bought out from the venture a little over 10 year later by Bulloch Lade. The blending firm merged with DCL (now Diageo) in 1927, who still run the distillery today. In 1972 the original site was demolished and replaced by a new one. When distilling resumed in 1974, Caol Ila was the largest producer of single malt on the Isle of Islay. Despite this, due to its importance in popular blends such as Johnnie Walker, its single malt brand disappeared under United Distillers, and it was not until 2002 that it would return, when the 12 year old was revived by Diageo.

The rarer of the two Caol Ila bottlings on offer at the 2019 Feis Ile festival on Islay. This is a single cask, exclusively available at the distillery's open day, and is one of only 180, hand-bottled by then Distillery Manager, Pierrick Guillaume, who signed each one.

Distilled in September 1990, cask #9373-159 was bottled at 28 years old.
