Nc'nean is single malt Scotch whisky distillery located in the Drimnin Estate on the Morvern Peninsula of Scotland's west coast. Its name is an abbreviation of Neachneohain, a figure from Gaelic folk legend known as the Queen of the Spirits. Nc'nean was founded in 2017 by Annabel Thomas who left her job in London in 2013 to begin work on building the distillery from the ground up and work began on the project in 2014.
Designed by the late Dr. Jim Swan, the distillery prides itself on sustainability and its production is both fully organic, and powered entirely by renewable energy.
The Nc'nean brand was first introduced in 2018 when the distillery began selling its Botanical Spirit drink, produced by infusing its new make with classic gin botanicals. Its debut whisky was launched in 2020 via a limited release called Ainnir - the first ten bottles of which were sold exclusively via Whisky Auctioneer with bottle number 1 achieving an incredible hammer price of £41,004 (which was split between five industry and environmental charities).
Four small batch releases followed later in 2020 and these currently serve as the flagship release in lieu of a permanent core range expression. They are supported by single cask releases known as Aon (introduced in 2021), a cask strength batch release (introduced in 2024) and various other limited editions.
