Kyrö
Kyrö is a distillery in Finland that commenced production in 2014 and is located in Isokyrö within a former dairy, next the river after which it is named. The idea for the distillery was hatched in 2012 by five friends - Miika Lipiäinen, Mikko Koskinen, Kalle Valkonen, Miko Heinilä, and Jouni Ritola - who were at the time drinking American rye whisky in a sauna and lamenting the lack of spirit produced locally using the grain.
While the distillery's primary production is its whisky, it also began distilling gin in 2015. Both spirits are produced entirely using 100% locally sourced rye.
The Kyrö brand name is used to market both the distillery's gin and whisky, and was launched in 2014 with the release of small batches of unaged spirit called Juuri, followed by aged batches called Verso. The first fully-matured rye whiskies were then released in 2017, again in batches before the debut core range release, simply known as Malt, was introduced in 2020. A blend of between 3- and 5-year-old American oak-aged rye whisky, it remains the core range release today alongside another called Wood Smoke, which used a portion of rye smoked with alder wood.
The distillery's gin was originally launched under the Napue brand name in 2015 before being renamed in 2019. The spirit is the same however, and is produced from 100% local rye and sixteen different herbs and spices.
