Glenwyvis
Glenwyvis is a Highland malt distillery located north of Dingwall and takes its name from a a contraction of those of two silent distilleries that once operated in the same area: Ben Wyvis in Dingwall and Glenskiach in Evanton. The idea for Glenwyvis was hatched in 2015 by farmer and green energy advocate, John McKenzie, and it became the first community-owned distillery after its construction in 2017 was facilitated by a share offer fundraising campaign that raised £2.6m in just 77 days the year prior. A second round in 2017 brought the number of shareholders to 3,200.
The distillery runs entirely on renewable energy (another area in which it was the first), and its first spirit was produced in November 2017. In addition to whisky, it also produces gin following a vote in its favour by shareholders in 2018.
The Glenwyvis brand is actually slightly older than the distillery itself and was first used to market gin sourced from Saxa Vord distillery in Unst. Doubling as advertising, the bottles also featured details of how potential investors could get involved in the planned distillery project. Gin production was eventually moved in-house by Glenwyvis Distillery Ltd in 2018 and the product launched under the new name, Goodwill.
The Glenwyvis brand was then reserved for the distillery's single malt whisky and it first appeared in the form of new make spirit bottlings in 2019. The first single malts were then bottled in 2021 with a special shareholders bottling produced alongside a publicly available Inaugural Release. No core range is available from the brand currently, with small batch vintage releases preferred.
