Caperdonich
Originally built as an expansion distillery for Glen Grant and known for many years simply as Glen Grant No.2, Caperdonich was a large distillery in Speyside.
In its lifetime the distillery was mostly operated for the provision of its ownership's blended Scotch brands. Some single malt has been officially bottled over the years but its name is more common on the independent bottling scene. When Pernod Ricard acquired the Scotch whisky assets of Seagram in 2001, they closed Caperdonich the following year. It has since been demolished.
The distillery was officially named Caperdonich in 1965 when it was re-opened by The Glenlivet & Glen Grant Distilleries. The company had found great success with its Glen Grant single malt in Italy and sought to replicate this, introducing a Caperdonich brand and exporting a 5-year-old to Italy via Armando Giovinetti in the early 1970s. The label was only short-lived however as the distillery was acquired by Seagram in 1977 and their focus was on provision of their blends.
Production in the later years at Caperdonich was high however and despite closing the distillery in 2002, Pernod Ricard had a large inventory of its ageing stock. They relaunched a Caperdonich single malt brand in 2019 as part of their new Secret Speyside range, bottling regular small batch releases of both its peated and unpeated varieties.
