Abhainn Dearg
The Abhainn Dearg distillery is located at Red River on the Isle of Lewis and was the first legal whisky producer in the area for over 150 years.
A craft operation, the distillery is the most remote in Scotland and its practices reflect this. Its single malt is distilled in small batches on stills made by its owner, Mark Tayburn, and are both bottled and hand-labelled on site.
The Abhainn Dearg brand was debuted in 2011 with the introduction of the distillery's first product, a 3-year-old single malt titled The Spirit of Lewis. The product launch took place at the Royal National Mòd, a festival of Scottish Gaelic literature, traditional music, and culture which was hosted that year in Stornoway.
Due to its small production capacity, releases from the distillery are not easy to come by but in 2018 it celebrated a milestone by bottling its first 10-year-old single malt, which was in fact the oldest whisky to have be produced by a legal distillery in the Outer Hebrides.
