J.P. Van Winkle & Son

Founded
1972
Company type
Independent Bottler

J.P. Van Winkle & Son was an American whiskey company established in 1972. It was founded by Julian Van Winkle Jnr, son of the now legendary Julian 'Pappy' Van Winkle. He had sold the Stitzel-Weller distillery that year, and the new company was established to continue the family business. He was joined by his own son, Julian III, in 1977.

The company's modus operandi was bottling commemorative decanters, which it filled with bourbon acquired from new Stitzel-Weller owners, Somerset Importers. Its primary brands were the Old Rip Van Winkle and Old Commonwealth labels. It was dissolved following Julian Jnr's death in 1981, and Julian III went on to establish a new company called Commonwealth Distillery Co.
