Glen Breton
Glen Breton is the flagship brand of Canadian single malt whisky, produced and marketed by Glenora Distillers International in Nova Scotia. The brand's use of the "Glen" prefix was met with fierce opposition by the Scotch Whisky Association (SWA) when introduced in 2000, leading to an official legal challenge in 2007. A back-and-forth litigation battle, the claims of the SWA were initially rejected by the Canadian Intellectual Property Office before an appeal was then upheld in the Federal Court in 2008. Glenora successfully counter-appealed later that year and a final objection was then dismissed by the Supreme Court of Canada in 2009. A 15-year-old Glen Breton called Battle of the Glen was released in 2010 to celebrate the ruling.
Today the brand is available in a variety of age statements, the core expression being a 10-year-old and oldest being a 30-year-old. A number of Glen Breton Ice releases are also produced and are the first single malts to have been aged in Canadian ice wine casks from Jost Vineyards.
